According to the official modern taxonomy, cannabis should be included in the family of Cannabaceae, along with hops, after being inserted between the first Moracee and later of the Urticaceae.

Regard to species, most botanists now follows the classification dates back to 1924 by D. E. Janichewsky, widespread in the West by Richard Schultes in the seventies. Studying the plants that grow wild in Central Asia, Soviet botanist ranking 'three different species: C. sativa, the most 'widespread, as much as three meters in height, very resinous and pyramid-shaped, C. indicates, more 'small and with many leaves, C. ruderalis, at most two feet in height and without branches.

Is thus' confirmed the view of Linnaeus who already 'in 1753 speak' exclusively of C. Sativa, according to studies conducted on plants growing in northern Europe. But there is' an alternative classification, although in the minority, proposed by Small and Cronquist in 1976. The two Canadian scientists say there is only one highly variable species, C. sativa, with two subspecies, sativa and shows: the first is located in the north and it 'used for fiber and oil, the second is growing warmer countries of the South and' full of resin and properties' intoxicants. Both subspecies were then wild and domesticated variants, according to the place of cultivation.

Cannabis and 'dioecious, or are separately male (produce pollen) and female (fertilized, produces flowers and seeds). Only in particularly hostile environments we can find both male and female flowers on the same plant. The unmistakable leaves seven match points all from the same stem, variable in number and are thin, deep green, serrated edges, with obvious veins and thin hair. The stem becomes very strong as the plant starts to mature, and can 'easily exceed five meters in height. The root system, however, reveals a taproot of 30 to 40 centimeters from which radiate thin branches.

Annual plant, cannabis has a short cycle, with seeds planted in early spring, bloom in the middle 'summer and autumn ripening. The seeds germinate in less than a week and pollination usually occurs with the wind, because 'insects such as bees are not attracted by the flowers of cannabis. If grown for fiber, generally the plants are kept very close together, and thus lengthen excessively without producing branches, with a small bush at the top. In such cases shall not occur even to the division between males and females, which is instead essential for crops for medical purposes and / or intoxicants. Are the flowers of the female to produce as much 'of the resinous material containing the active ingredient, delta - 9 - tetrahydrocannabinol, better known by the initials THC. Inflorescences sprout tip 'of the branches, and so' gathered to protect the development of seeds, oval and leathery. Although searches are not yet final, it seems that the plant that produces sweating as a defense from excessive heat, so as to retain moisture 'necessary for the maturation of the seeds, when the reproductive process and' concluded, the resin is no longer 'produced.

More than 460 chemical components of the plant, and more 'than 60 reveal the structure typical of cannabinoids. Among these, the delta - 9 - THC, present at around 1 - 5% of the total weight, and 'the only one so far discovered to have significant properties' psychoactive effects. This percentage drops to less than 0.5% in plants grown for fiber, which instead are full of cannabinol.

Plants that produce more resinous material (regulated by genetic factors) are those that grow in warm climate regions - moist, Mexico, India, Middle East, California - and usually produce plants from seeds, only very different, if they grow in different geographical locations. In northern Europe, for example, the production of resin and 'minimal, and in several areas of southern Italy the results are similar to those of African farmers. This confirms the remarkable adaptability 'of marijuana and explains the constant presence alongside Homo Sapiens in his wanderings on the planet.
Extremely strong and durable, cannabis can grow and reproduce in the wild almost anywhere, even if it prefers loose, sandy soils, rich in nitrogen and potassium. Requires no special attention except watering discrete phase of germination. The cultivation techniques differ greatly depending on their areas and the final destination. In recent decades later systems have been developed quite sophisticated and even genetic crosses, particularly in the U.S., to increase the concentration of THC and thus the psychotropic effects. Typically, an average cigarette contains about 500 mg. marijuana, 5 to 20 mg. THC, of which only 50% reaches the lungs.

The effects of cannabis on humans have been reported for doses of 25 mcg. [a mcg. corresponds to 1 / 1000 of a gram] per 1 kg. weight. Intense hallucinations were reported for doses around 250 mcg. per kg.

No death due to overdose and 'so far been found.

A search conducted in 1980 at the Universita 'of Los Angeles has shown that the acute and sustained over time does not cause changes in mental function of the subjects. The only adverse pharmacological effects on health so far documented are those of the respiratory tract, due to nicotine produced by combustion. This was confirmed by a recent study conducted in San Francisco (Western Journal of Medicine, 9 June 1993): those who smoke cannabis regularly risk for respiratory diseases to 19% more 'who does not smoke. The research also found that those consumers most likely 30% 'of various incidents, referring particularly to motor vehicle accidents caused by those driving under the influence of marijuana. In this sense, however, there were no significant differences compared with accidents caused by those driving under the influence of alcohol. Finally, no dependence and / or physical addiction 'was never established, although in some subjects can' rise a certain psychological dependence. Empirical observation has however confirmed that the motivations, the environment and the circumstances in which it takes the substance of fundamental importance for the whole experience - as well as in the case of psychedelics.

On the other hand virtues 'therapeutic cannabis are known since the most' ancient, at least several thousand years before Christ.

The plant was used in many preparations and in extreme circumstances' disparate. The modern scientific literature documents their applications since 1837 and over the past 50 years, cannabis and 'was used successfully against nausea, muscle spasms, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, migraine, vomiting, and in recent years for various cases of AIDS and cancer.
