Hello to all my fellow ic'magers,
My little Siamese x who is nearly 2 yrs old had 3 lil kittens 6 days ago. The first came out all good and was the biggest and strongest. The the 2nd took 2 hours and kind of got stuck half way, we had to break the sack ourselves and then encourage it to breathe, it is the runt. And the 3rd came out fine. But this second one, the runt has had problems finding her teet from the start and need assistance for the first day. It is now keeping up with the others in weight. And I can't see anything physically wrong about it. But for some reason, the mother keeps pulling it out of the basket and leaving it on the floor alone. This has only been happening for the past day. I thought maybe because i had touched it. But I have touched all 3 when I changed the blankets in the basket a day after they were born and she didn't seem to act strangely then or towards the other 2. One thing I did notice was when I woke up in the middle of the night lastnight, the Father was actually in the basket licking and cleaning this particular one. He was being so gentle. I couldn't believe my eyes. I got him out of there instantly, but I don't know how long he was in there for. Could this be the reason she is trying to ditch this kitten??? or does anyone think that maybe the mum and dad can sense something is not well with this lil one. I have heard of wild cats like lions and tigers acting like this, but not domestic cats. Also we have been watching the dad like a hawk as I have been nervous about him hurting them like lions do in the wild. But that doesn't seem to be the case. This is my 1st litter with this female. But I have experienced 8 litters and never seen anything like this behaviour before. If anyone has any idea's on whats going on or what to do, please . I am desperate....~Mellomel...

I have a Siameser too! He is 17 !!!
The only time I ever heard of a father cat messing with kittens, it was cause they wanted to kill em, and bring the female back in heat. It ain't natural. Mamma seems to be either thinking that baby won't make it, or she don't want it. Lock her in a cat carrier with the baby when you are not around to watch her spiteful butt! If the kitty has made it this long, it should be OK I would think. Good luck !! |

That's exactly what I was thinking with male cats and exactly for that reason too. Maybe he is just to much of a pussy boy-the Dad.
And don't worry, I am watching her very closely indeed. If I have to step in and be a foster mum, I will. I think I might start locking the boy up again at night and when we go out. I just still don't trust him. With her, I just figure mum knows best. I also thought that by 3 days, you can usually tell if any are not going to make it. Thank you Lola

I wish I had a new kitty. I swore if mine died, I would not have another litter box to clean.
Perhaps I will hit a Lotto Jackpot and be able to build a bathroom I don't have to share with the kiitty. Yuck. good luck kitties! Take care Mel! |

Cats have some kinda weird sense, and they will not want anything to do with one or even all of their kittens, I swear its like a Post partum thing LOL.. no really, but maybe she senses that your little runt, is a runt.. I wish I could help.. but I did raise a kitten that was just a few weeks old that I found dying in the street. He was covered in desert fleas, and was emaciated, and found it hard to eat.. I bottle fed him, and rubbed his behind to get him to learn how to poop. It was hard, and a lot of staying up with him. This cat is now a few years old, and fat as hell lol... I swear must weigh 20 pounds lol...Its possible to take care of a kitten that the mother wont take care of...also there is a kind of paste, that has all the nutrients in it that a kitten would need if your kitten isnt growing the way he/she should, I'll have to look for the name of it, but I used it with my cat, and it kept him alive.....
good luck! |

She may sense that something is wrong with little kitty, but he's lived this long. I think it's really strange behavior, but a runt is nothing to worry about too much. The runt of my litter that gave my my 2 coons is the biggest boy, he's 18 pounds...his "big" brother is dwarfed at 13 pounds.
Wierdest thing ever....I have an Ocicat/Tabby mix, his name is Tink. When my 2 coons were born, Tink would get inside the room (our fault) and pick up the kittens one by one by their necks...and drop them off in our bed in the middle of the night. Like he was their Momma or something. We always joke that Tink is our gay cat...he's very ladylike, but he never hurt my kittens....now they whoop his ass I would keep Daddy kitty away for a while and do what Lola said, force bonding/feeding time on her. Cats are defiant little critters, but you can pursuade them....with a lot of patience. If kitty needs to be hand fed, I can link you to some places that will walk you through baby care and feedings. My little kitten Fluffmaster was a healthy runt, but him and his sister did develope a little cold and had to be put on antibiotics at 3 weeks old. Watch for respiratory, eye and weight issues. Hope the little angel fits in better soon. I know you're probably stressing out bad right now, I think he'll be okay hun

Hey Lola, haven't all cat owners thought that about the damn litter box at some stage, I know I did.
KK- yeah, I have rescued a few baby possums and kangaroo's in my lifetime so far. And it's the same deal with getting them to poop and wee. I tried ringing the animal hospital I volunteer at in summer. But they don't really like cats or dogs there. And blame them for the diminishing wildlife population. I understand that all too well, but they are only bubbies... I have a proper possum feeding bottle which looks very similar to the ones on the internet. And the animal hospital has lent me a sling pouch and heating pad to keep him warm. Just when my boy finally starts sleeping the whole night through, and now I have to kitty-sit. I don't mind at all though...

I absolutely adore Ocicats. Breeders go crazy for them over here, and so does the price. I have always wanted an Oci, but have yet to come across one. And what a great name. I have been watching his breathing and eyes all along. And the last time Bella took him out, I scolded her and put them both back in and made her lie down to feed them. She hasn't pulled it out since. I just keep saying "good girl" and she constantly talks back to me. Thank you so much for your warm words Miss B. You have eased my stress, I believe this one is a survivor- I'll make sure of it...If I have any problems or it comes to me raising him, I'll message you for those links. Thank you all for your help and kind words of support. I will keep you all posted on how he is diong.

Haha, I got a funny possum story.
I went down on the highway, one night, heard squealing tires, and all that. Poor old mamma possum had bit the dust. There were scattered possum babies everywhere. I counted 17 if I remember right. Some baby possums were dead, as was Mum, but there were a bunch of them that were still alive. They were fairly good sized, and had been hanging on Mum's back. OK, so they are small enough to still be cute, so I box em up and go down to a neighbor's house who had a bunch of kids. (sneaky, ain't I??) I tell em about Mum, and open the box, hoping they will take them off my hands. Yippie! They fell for it, and said they had a cat that had older kittens. We decided to try to get Mum Kitty to feed those 12 possum babies. heehee, Ole Mamma Kitty took up with the possums, the kittens were weaned a little early. Funniest thing I ever saw was an old cat walking around with 12 possums hanging onto her back all the time..... The got bigger, and ran off to play in the road like their mother. Possums will be possums.
