How about Hops?
These are very small but they are producing flowers in copious amounts. They were growing from rhizome since May, but were then put in the ground first week of june. So they are small. I hope I get enough to brew with at least once this season.

I'm jealous of you guys. I have some slips on order from Pinetree Gardens in Me., but I still don't know where I'm going to find room for them. My yards packed. I do have a beer drinking buddy a few town over who has a big back yard, I think I'm going to guerilla him up. Hops is mostly dioecious, so I guess I'd need a male vine if I want to breed them. Anyone know a good source for commercial brewing hops seeds? Or, do hop breeders just cross wild ones with the known clones?

That's so cool, homebrew and sheriff bart! I just hit a homebrewing class and it was lots of fun. Haven't brewed my own yet, but immediately thought about growing hops. Anyone ever heard of using hydro to grow hops outdoors (or indoors)? Maybe something like an autopot, very simple. And hey Bart, that ornamental seems to have a lot of nugs on it. Can it be used to brew or is there something bad about it?
Mr. G, from what i can tell most hops are acquired as rhizomes, which are the equivalent of clones in their industry--genetic copies of female plants. I don't think breeders use wild strains, but rather cross existing strains that are proven to create new ones. |

Here is an impressive hydro/greenhouse setup that looks like it yielded massively. Promising for my single autopot plan on my front deck...
