Question about 2 plant sizes in a vert setup
Here is the scenario
System is (2) 1K HPS in 48" cooltube square system with 4 walls I.D. 56" - about 22" from shelf to outer part of cooltube. 22" space between outercasing of cooltube to shelves. Top shelves are 5'6" with 18" plants on them the bottom shelves are 12" above the ground, allowing a plant to be 18" tall before interfering with the next shelves plant above it. Normally there would be (20) 18" plants on the lowest shelves. The low shelves do get good light and ventilation, nice flowering location. My question is this: I want to know if this would be better or worse in regard to yield. Get rid of all 4 lower shelves (20 x 18" plants) and replace with moms that are going to be chucked out. The moms are about 4' tall and heavily noded, was thinking to put 8 of them in there, 2,2,2,2 Shred them down to about 6 nice branches each and LST them so they dont exceed the total height of 12" from ground to shelf, 8" height of pot and 18" plant height restriction giving a total of 41" Do you think these (8) three and a half foot moms can yield more than (20) plants that would normally be flipped at 12 inches tall, the moms being well rooted, huge beefy main stalks and very stong branches and the 12" baby clones not that well rooted and more of a SOG type plant? Ive never done huge plants before and was hoping someone could help me out here, Thanks

If it fills in the same canopy space it should yield roughly the same amount either way. As long as the moms are in good shape and not deficient, rootbound, etc from being kept around for awhile I would probably try it.
What do you usually yield per small plant? Do you have the floor space to just add them in under the light? Scrog them maybe? |

im thinking they may be rootbound, they are 4 feet and in 3 gal pots if they were just added in to the existing system, they would block all the light from the bottow row anyhow. These little sog guys get about 18grams each so if one shefl of 5 small girls gets say 20x5=100 grams about 3.5 oz x 4 = 14 oz the big gals would have to produce 1.75 oz to be equal, that seems really possible and actually seems to have the hicher chance to exceed 1.75 Can anyone that grows 2 foot + plants under 1k HPS please chime in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think the most important element of the equation should be the amount of growing media
for exempele 8 pots x 3.5 liter = 28 4 pots x 11 liter = 44 Bodhi Roach nice post

hmmmmmm,
Lots of factors IMO but soil indoors is foreign to me. Seems the principals are a little different. I think that mom will root bind by flowers end maybe a transplant if you go with them, just to give them some fresh runners squirrelfooker seems to have about what im thinkin, canopy is canopy but depends if the root ways are equally healthy, those little ones might blow up where the big girl never gets that boost, just sorta flowers Your floor looks awfully dark, heat holder, light eater? All just my 2cents for now |

If it was me i would totally rock the mom plants and transplant and lollipop the shit outa them. good luck. |

Bodhi- been mia for a while & just saw this post today... sorry bout that, though don't know how much help can be at this time...?
Looks like you went w the mums, or are the recent photos just to put things in perspective??? See the smaller pots behind as well, so not for sure. If you have the smaller plants (18g'rs) I would just run them & toss the larger mums. You could do a heck of a lot of work on them as Teeg suggested, but they look a little bushy. The problem I see with this is that you won't be able to effectively utilize the entire vertical canopy as you would w the smaller plants. It would seem that topping & training would have to implemented early on in order to maximize the canopy. Just my way of picturing things. The quality of the nugs will likely be better w the smaller stalks vs a bush, though the total yield might be less, assuming no trim to the bushes...? You'll likely just get more medium to lower grade nugs, but more...? Then again, if you can't maximize the canopy with those bushes, the stalks might outweigh. I say screw it & go your normal routine that you are accustomed to. Should you wish to try for bushes w fewer counts, start it out from the beginning. Don't know if this helps at all, but at least another perspective, even if medicated. BTW, I'm in the process of switching from your style (my style) to one with much fewer plant counts. I'm planning for 6 around a 1k finishing at 4-5' in height with training towards the end of veg through flow. Verti of coarse! Peace.

Hey Bodhi, just saw your post. I see everyone is talking about root bound soil. Thats great and all, buy why don't you go with pots filled with RW or something of that nature? Seems like it would be less hassle, and plant roots need less space in hydro than in soil.
As for your moms, I would do the 4 plants personally. Make a square or octagonal screen at your perimeter, then scrog the plants right in. Also, I wouldn't cut or LST them, until you see the space they need to fill. |
