melons of the family of cantalopes

hi all i just started a new hobby - im preparing to start growing melons... i love specifically the family of cantalopes.

im slowly collecting seeds from all tasty and nice cantalope melons i buy got chantais (orange meat) and galia (green meat), also i got toadskin, and black water melon (round), and striped water melon (oval).

this thread will grow very slowly since i wont plant untill next year - but the collecting part is as fun atleast for me - so i will share what i find here!

ill post some pics of the melons when i get time its fun to have a photo of the originals as reference

also besides melons i have started to collect other various fruit and flower seeds.

the papaya seeds i collected from an ecuatorial variety a few years back grow nicelly now, but i think it might need to be continued to flower indoors since i planted them very late.

anyone else like melons ?

peace all!

jay kush - please post a pic! i bet the seeds of those are interesting most cantalopes are heirloom i dont know of many hybrids

yortbogey - sounds interesting! i wanna see them when ripe whats the colour etc? maybe we can identify it?

the cool part of the melons are their modest and sometimes even ugly outside contrasted by the sweet fragrant meat love em!

my favorite is to take a few different kinds, chop em a bit and blend in a mixer with some milk and ice.. best vitamin shake EVER

specially now when im undergoing dental surgery melons are good for the imune defense system too

Cantaloupe Health Benefits, Cantaloupe Nutritional Facts

Cantaloupe with its refreshingly rich flavor and odour and minimum number of calories, is the most popular form of melon. Cantaloupe is also referred to as a netted melon because it has a ribless rind with a distinctive netted skin. It has evolved as an excellent source of vitamin C.

One cup of cantaloupe contains 112.5% of the daily value for this well-known antioxidant. Cantaloupe has antioxidants that help us fight heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, aging, etc. Cantaloupe is also a very good source of potassium, vitamin B6, dietary fiber and niacin (vitamin B3).

The combination of all these B complex vitamins along with the fiber found in cantaloupe make it an exceptionally good fruit for supporting energy production through good carbohydrate metabolism and blood sugar stability. Cantaloupe is fat and cholesterol free, and is a good source of Folate.

Folate is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells, and is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. Cantaloupe is also high in beta-carotene, which our bodies convert into Vitamin A and helps in protecting our eyes from cataracts and mascular degeneration.

here's a good early cantaloupe ...

Minnesota Midget is softball size with sugary flesh that's edible right to the rind.

No fruits so far but lots of blooms. I'm trying to trellis them.

Nothings more tasty than a perfectly ripe cantaloupe! Good and good for you.

well i love them, but ive heard others say regular watermelons are better. the chef at this restaurant i used to work at used them for some seafood dish, forget what it was. other people were talking about how good his watermelons were, so i thought they couldnt be much worse than red ones, and it was cool to see, so i tried it and liked it.

whereas i think regular watermelons are a little dry and not very sweet, these were juicy, sweet, and just plain delicious.

i love most other fruits and veggies
