First Grow -- Vertical Indoor Soil (2k)
This is my first grow. I vegged under a 400w HPS and flipped them to 12/12 10 days ago. 5/7 females. Killed the males. All in FFOF, 5 gal. buckets. Random seeds from Amsterdam. Picking up (2) 1000w HPS tomorrow. Each plant is about 3 ft. tall right now. Mostly topped to 4 colas each. Debating how to hang the lights. Will pick up (2) maybe (3) 600w HPS in 2 weeks and hang them too.
Looking to maximize yield. People with experience: would you hang them around the plants ala Krusty, or put the 1000's one on top of the other with the plants in a circle around them and then throw the 600's around them? My space is about 10x10, but I don't plan to use it all if I don't have to. |

CS, you've got a lot of light. Considering, would strongly suggest you run a MH in there as well... should give you better overall light spectrum & assist in resin content.
With that said, seeing that you already have them veg'd horizontally, wouldn't stack the bulbs as bottom 2' of your height going to pots/base stem & top 1-2' not going to use... so only really have to toss light over a 4-5' vertical area. Single 1k is fine, especially if you are going to supp w 600's. If going to commit to vertical, next grow can make accommodations. Peace.

OB - Read your advice yesterday morning. Picked up (1) 1000w Eye Hortilux Super HPS and put it up. Wow, that's one bright light! The shop didn't have any MH and the 600's don't get here for at least another week.
Some of the plants were very droopy this morning. I figure all the extra lumens put their metabolism into overdrive and I need to water more often. Like once a day now. Does that sound right? Even if they're in 5 gal. buckets? Also picked up some flowering fert. Should I add it with every watering? (0-50-20, 6g / 5 gallon) Figured I'd start at 50% strength and slowly build it up and look out for nute burn. Any additional advice would be really appreciated. Thanks. |

I usually keep them a good 3' when transferring to a 1k. I also drop the nute levels a little. Reason for me is that they go through a degree of shock... higher heat, much more light, lower rh & higher air circ.
I'll bring them in closer by 6" every 3-4days. I'll slowly step up the nutes over the first two weeks of bloom, then start adding my booster toward end of wk3... still not at peak. This won't happen til end wk4-5. My goal is to make things as stress free as possible even though i am simultaneously subjecting them to it. I err on the low side of nute levels as this can very easily be addressed. Returning from the other side of this problem is much harder & more time consuming. BTW, you've really got a lot of light. Might want to hold back on those orders, but do not know what you've got in mind, so... Peace brother!

OB -- Thanks for the advice. I will back them off from the light and bring them in slowly. I didn't consider the extra light might be a stressor on the plant and kept them as close as I could without them burning, like 12 inches.
I'll also add the nutes slowly, starting with 1/4 strength and work my way up a bit. Since this is my first run I've been trying to keep variables as much on the safe side as possible. As for the lights, I don't have them on order. It's just that there won't be any available for purchase for at least a week. My plans have been all over the place since I first decided to do this. For various reasons I ended up doing my first grow in soil and trying to go big. Since the seeds are random I couldn't calculate the stretch and flipped as late as I thought I could push them. I'm germinating some new seeds tonight and I'm going to try something different for round two. I think I'm going to try a 7 shelf octagon ala Kootenay, https://icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=110670 in coco coir with some form of auto watering; but do it perpetual sog ala Al B. Fuct from rollitup.org. I wasn't pleased with the slow growth of soil. So maybe just 2k more, 1 MH and 1 HPS. Peace & much love an happiness. Thanks again for taking the time. |
