May Apple - Umbrella Plant - Unusual edible fruit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podophyllum My pics: was told to collect them in the fall, when the fruit is yellow like a lemon, all the leaves have fallen off and almost dead, some even pick them off the ground in the fall after they have fallen, some say "deadly" if not fully ripe. there are huge patches everywhere, in the world? don't know, but you can easily find the patch in the spring, they have huge leaves. we think fruit is supposed to be strawberry / acai / exotic. we will see, this will be our first sample this year, plan to eat raw and cook in pie, will be back to update. any one else ever try em?

They are just fine when ripe. just scrape out the seeds. No worries about toxicity. We make a compote by boiling and using brown sugar and spread on toast or pour on ice cream. It makes great jelly.

safe then to assume you did not die. collect them on the stalk or when they fall off onto ground and foreage for em.

They can be used when well ripe on the plant, or when they fall off. Be sure to treat them just like every other fruit or veggie, make sure they pass the visual inspection and be sure to wash them.
I didn't realize that my family does a lot of foraging with may apples, wild onions, and greens. lol. Great thread. |

Bud checked the May Apple patch and saw that some where missing? maybe some animal beat us to them? The leaves pretty dried up. some fruit on the ground and these came off very very easy.

Give them a few days on the windowsill to ripen up so they don't upset some people's tummys. I have only heard anecdotal evidence that they cause stomach upset, but my family eats them every year at that ripeness. Those are a great find and a very good size. They should be absolutely delicious!
