designing vert space 400 or 600w?
I have a closet in the house about 32"x80" and 6.5ft tall. It's actually a washer/dryer closet space. I want to partition off a 32"x32" space in one corner with black/white poly for my space. And with a 6" inline S&P which claims of moving 200+cfm that seems it would be more than efficient moving the air in the room 3 times a minute. The 2.7x.2.7x6.5ft room is only 47ft^3
All of this with a bare 600w hanging in the middle with a cage around it with a diameter of 20" leaving me with a diameter all the way around the bulb of 10" and 6" for plants and a fan blowing upward at the exhaust intake in the middle of the floor. Or is this overkill and I should just settle for the 400w and a 4" exhaust?

If you hang the 600 inside a cool tube, your fan will be plenty capable of keeping the light cool. Just keep the bottom of the cool tube open, only covering it with netting, so that leaves and such don't get sucked inside. With such a small amount of space, if you don't use a cool tube, i don't see how you won't bleach your plants.

You don't need a 20" cage for a 600w you can reduce it to 18" no problem, with a cooltube you should be able to reduce it down to 16" or less

You're not going to be able to really efficiently max out the vertical 6½ feet with one bulb, HID or not. Better off going with two 250's, one on top of the other, preferably in a cooltube column. And if in doubt about ventilation, always go over and don't skimp.
If not in a cooltube tho - make sure you really ventilate the fuck out of that space. |

I stack (hang) two 600w HPS lamps in a room (4' x 4' x 6' (h)) inside of a room.
12" floor fan in an 20" cage, on the floor of a base within the inner room aimed up at the lamps and the inline fans. Three holes drilled into the base directly under the floor fan. Two 6" intake holes at stem base height and two 6" inline fans hung from the ceiling totaling approx. 500 CFM keep the inner room at a temperature that is 7 degrees (F) above the temp. in the main room. I like other vertical growers do not use a fan aimed at the plants at all during flowering. All exhaust / constant air movement is created with the setup described above. Day/night temp / humidity = 80/72 & 60-62%. Note that I'm in a humid locale and during the summertime need to use an AC in the main room in order to maintain control. |

Thanks a lot guys. The given input really comforts me in using a 600w in this area. I might go with the cool tube just to be safe though.

Positioning your plants very close to the lamp is your concern? Most of my plant material is up against the screen 9-10" from the lamps. Could probably be a little closer and I might tighten up the cage to an 18" diameter. One of these on the floor under the lamp aimed up at it can work wonders:
