Vert scrogging? - Vertical / Colosseum Growing - International Cannagraphic Magazine Forums

Hey guys, thought i'd start this off. I've recently tried the vertical method, and I'm hooked. Cage type grows are really easy to do, and seem to have a big payoff. Of course, you have to watch overvegging, as well as trimming at the right times. I use simple stakes to help train the plant, allowing them to bush up naturally, and yet controlling their direction to be a 45 degree angle to the light.

However, is there something even more efficient? To date, my best horizontally lit grows, have all been scrogs. I want to combine this great plant training technique with vertical lighting. Has anyone done a vertical scrog? To be more specific, a larger scale one, that uses several higher wattage (600 or 1k) bulbs.

My initial thought, is to make 8 large panels, that connect to each other, into the shape of an octagon, inside the cage. I could then train plants into a scrog on each panel, until its mostly covered, and then flip them. My thought is that it shoudn't take too long for each plant to fill about a 2x2 square on each panel. 3 plants per panel.

The cage that is being used can be run in 1 of 3 ways, that i am also debating about.

NFT is pretty easy to do, but I am skeptical about running without a medium the whole time. Never having run an NFT setup, I'm not certain how soon I will try this, although I have read that it can grow plants very quickly, only a step down from aero.

Simple ebb and flow is what i'm used to running. The columns on the cage are filled with hydroton, and then you flood and drain the plants as normal.

Lastly, is a method I saw Heath Robinson do on one of his grows from another site. He was basically running an nft type setup, but filled his tubes with hydroton. This almost seems like the best of both worlds for me. However, I'm also unsure about this. Thoughts?

I've read that thread several times through. I was looking for a little bit more specific thoughts as to my setup.

okay then im sorry!

i would use hydroton watered 24/7 (works great - easy to use)
i might would build up 2 levels of plants in raingutters maybe? 3 plant each wall each level would mean around 48 plants and not too long of a veg period ...

maybe you wanna visualize your thoughts - makes it easier for everybody

Mr Jones,

I've already got the system built for doing this. Its a cage type system using 4" pvc. I simply cut 2" holes in it, and insert the plants with a neoprene collar. I fill the tubes with hydroton up to each plant site, insert the plant, then continue the process until filled. The long tubes (7 feet each) are stood in buckets, that are all connected to a controller. I have a float valve in there, that turns on a pump, to pump it all back to a central resi, when the level gets high enough in the buckets. The irrigation at the top is the same as El Blastido used, caps with holes punched into them. In theses caps I have a 1/2" T connector, connected to a Shrub sprayer. These are all connected in a long circle.

I don't want to sway you away from hydroponics, but why not give soil or coco a try? Coco can have very similar growth rates as most hydroponic systems and organics doesn't need any PH monitoring.I would find that very simplistic to go along with vertical scrog.

I think another good thing to look at is a specific strain. What strain are you running? I'm sure a sativa leaning strain would definitely give you some boost in yield considering that they are a bit taller for your light to cover.

I've done more vertical tree grows as that is a bit more popular. But I'm curious how this will turn out since I don't see many vertical scrogs. I'm very interested in the results.
