Supposedly it's a deadly killer now. I loved it as a kid but they haven't sold it in years. Last time I saw some in the store it was a fake concoction, 100% sassafras free. I still rip up a few trees when I visit back east.

"The oil (essential root oil) contains safrole, which is said to have carcinogenic activity and has been banned from use in American foods - though there is plenty of modern research which shows that it is less likely to cause cancer than alcohol. In large doses, however, the oil is poisonous, causing dilated pupils, vomiting, stupor, collapse and kidney and liver damage." I was at Burning Man and was gifted a sassafras pill... a capsule filled with a white powder. When consumed it gave off the most euphoric and warmest feeling, packed with perma-smiles. I don't roll at all, and this was probably the first time I took something of this caliber.. but does anyone know what exactly it was? The kids told me it was a precursor to mali or something, just natural and not as bad/chemically for you.. anyone know what I'm talking about? |

An aside: safrole is on the DEA watching list. Sage, nutmeg and other spices, they all contain so-called 'Essential Oils' from which other drugs can be derived. Most of them are non-scheduled. If someone is really interested in the chemistry behind, I can highly recommend some books by Uncle Fester, 'Secrets of Methamphetamin Synthesis' and 'Advanced Techniques of Clandestine Psychedelic & Amphetamine Manufacture'.

Chyaa thanks clovenhoof for clearing this up! I think I'd definitely be DEA Blacklisted if I purchased those books or visited errowids vault, but they definitely would be interesting material to read. Thanks!
