Prosecutors seek life sentence for Australian in Bali marijuana trial

https://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...s_050421075430

DENPASAR, Indonesia (AFP) - Indonesian prosecutors sought a life sentence for an Australian woman on trial for allegedly smuggling a large quantity of marijuana onto the resort island of Bali.

They also demanded that Schapelle Corby, 27, who was arrested last October when customs officers at Bali's main airport found 4.1 kilograms (nine pounds) of the drug in her luggage, pay a fine of 100 million rupiah (10,460 dollars).

The former beauty student, who has denied the charge, shed tears as the prosecutor's request -- far short of the maximum permitted death penalty -- was translated in the court in the Balinese capital, Denpasar.

"The defendant has been proven, legally and convincingly of illegally and in contravention of the laws, importing class one narcotics," Prosecutor Ida Bagus Wiswantanu said.

I remember reading about this girl several months ago, they said she was facing the death penalty. Glad to hear they are at least not killing her... they seem very harsh over there in the south pacific when it comes to weed. Wonder where the nine pounds came from... maybe someone put it in her bag or something.

this was the last sentence in the article... a somewhat disturbing afterthought.

They like making examples over there, and the death penalty is their favourite choice of example...bloody sickening to even want to kill someone over a weed :/

They are harsh over there and that is frightening. I actually read an article on her case, and some guy in prison supposedly overheard some guys laughing about her getting caught because they knew that she was unaware she was carrying the pot. Aparantly they were part of the gang that hid the pot in her body board bag. When stopped by customs she had no problem opening the bag for them because she knew she hadnt done anything wrong, and then bam 9lbs of weed.

It's very strange that when her luggage was checked in Australia,
there was no pot, so it obviously was put there by somebody else.
No wonder roughly 90% of Aussie's think she's innocent.

One thing that really annoys me is that the Indonesian police have refused
to finger-print the bag, which could clear Corby... I wonder why?
It makes one think that the Indonesian police are trying to protect
their own arses because they are prosecuting an innocent person,
or maybe they're protecting somebody else higher up.

As for the other 9 that were busted smuggling heroin in Bali,
it's tricky to tell if the majority of them are innocent.

Toke it easy and take care...

Yes....a very sorry state of affairs......lets all hope and pray that this poor woman gets freed.......even if it was her weed....the taxi that was to take her from the airport could have done much more damage than that erb' if used incorrectly.........would the driver then be facing a life sentance?

They probably think it'll stir up tensions between Indonesia and us again,
and that may cause another bombing, like what happened at Bali and the
Australian Embassy. But what ever the reason, I think the Australian
government is playing this issue weakly and need to step up and help her.

Stay safe...
