I was just wondering why a mercury vapor light was no good for growing? We have a 175 watt mv light but we have not used it. What is wrong with that kind of light? Why could we not use it? I like to ask dumb ? so if anyone likes to give dumb answers I would appreciate one. Thanks.

MERCURY VAPOR LAMPS =They are realtively inefficient in terms of usable light versus electrical consumption.Use mercury vapor bulbs only to add extra light to MH & HPS or supplementing natural light gardens. MH & HPS light have the best spectrum for growing plants wereas the spectrum from Mercury Vapor lamps are quite poor.A 400 watt MH or HPS covers more area with considerably cheaper bulb replacement costs. The disadvantages with MV lamps are that they burn HOT like a SPOTLIGHT & the area they illuminate is a smaller area than that from a comparable wattage MH OR HPS.The low -wattage MH or Hps lamps in self contained horizontal fixtures are cheaper than mercury vapor lamps in the long run and actually, they are more effective in terms of plant growth. These self-contained mini-horizontals are highly recommended for both mini-gardens and as supplemental lights. Hope this helps. Later Big

I use a 175 watter in my room. I wanted the UV thing and it produces a different spectrum than MH. MH also has the Blue range but I believe the MV does better on the UV lower Blue end of the nm scale.
I spent the last 8 months reading anything I can about Light sources and spectral outputs. I'm hoping to put together a nice piece on lighting soon but am currently in the beginning stages.
