Question imploring old stoner wisdom...

Hey ladies and gentlemen.... forgive the low post count. An older stoner pal of mine has been driving me nuts lately about some weed he used to smoke "back in the '70's." The guy has been a schwag master ever since the war on drugs started, and I've convinced him to begin growing his own. Anyways he's now convinced that he can grow some decent buds, but he won't shut up about what he claims to be the end all/ beat all smoke from the '70's: Colombian Red(s), aka C-buds, aka C-bo(s) (assuming those are all the correct names... that's all before my time-- I'm only 24). Like I said, the guy hasn't had any decent weed since the war on drugs, my hope is his grow will do well and the new weed will shut his ass up about "Oh man that Colombian... it came in this nice foil packet with a stamp...", "Oh man, the smell of that Colombian... it's unmistakable... nothing else like it..."

Anyways I ramble, since I am kinda a newbie to this site-- here are my obligatory questions:
1. Are there those out here who know about the Colombian stuff?
2. If you've smoked... does that line have some progeny for sale today (and who's got the best seeds)?
3. I've got my man starting a grow of Bog's grape punch, and nirvana's white rhino ( a little wtf note... we ordered 'em from seeds direct... kick ass service... but no freebies ).... Do you think these genetics will help shut his ass up ( I fear that colombian may have been sative dom. I think both these are more indica dom strains?))

Thanks for any and all responses and k+ in advance for anyone with some info on this strain, which is a legend in at least one man's mind.

Learnin2,
I remember the old days of pot,and in my opinion your friend would do much better smoking the new stuff,It has come to my attention lately amongst my crew of friends that they all remember specific times, and we were all much younger, thus the high was memorable and seemed stronger, were as i dont remember the weed being as strong as some of the stuff I've tried lately,my 2cents.

Welcome to IC

My all time fav pot was the Santa Marta Gold columbian /

While many of the strains are stronger & have great taste today - FEW have the taste & clear SATIVA high of the early coulmbian years.

Just now we see some of the breaders working with this lost heritage strain that was reported to be first smuggled in by 'Allen Long' in the early 70's (see the book "Pot Plot")

Reeffermans - Love potion #1 is of gold columbian decent

YES  - a few tokes of BOG's son's - Grape Punch will have him backing up on his memory of the gold bud

Juan Valdez loves that stuff...

Thanks for the hasty replies fella's. Oh and Fredster, I think he enjoyed the gold stuff you talked about too ( but when I hear colombian and gold in the same sentenc I ain't typically thinkin' weed... and I don't do drugs just weed). I'm gonna look into some sativa's for him... but I've been leaning more towards the hazes... looking at the ic cup I'm thinking hard about going to seedbay and getting on some cantaloupe haze from dna. Keep those stories coming if you got 'em guys. I find pot history amusing. Wish they'd of had that class in college.

The thing is that its tough to grow real santa marta gold in a closet or up north and a grower would do well to acclimate to his climate if outdoors and most indoor growers want faster flowering higher yielding strains that actually have much higher thc counts than the old treasures us old folks remember. Perhaps he just doesn't know how good the cannabis genetics are now. He should attend our event and see sometime. BOG

Red face If One is Old Enough

We should remember that in the old days Colombian was Commerial! Damn good it was too! The Mexican could melt your socks, thats why hippies went barefoot.

Nah Im not sure the Best of the Best was better Yesterday or Today or Tomarrow.

Since the street value of Home Grown " Hydro" "dro" has hit the roof, the Mexican Brick Swag is dirt cheap. Most of it should be, but every now and again you find something you wont find in ANY Seed Pack!'

Yeah, you find the Old Style Taste and High. It's a rare find though. Found only in Commerial Mexi Bick. " Swag "

I will say this, so far NOTHING has Beat the BUZZ that Late 70s Thai Stick gave me, Nothing. I don't care how many trichomes are on it.

Theres No Doubt that taste today is MUCH Better. We didn't have all these Hybrids and Polly Hybrids then. Also Outdoor Crops tend to be Harvested Late, causing a Couch Lock type High, perhaps thats what I'm Missing. We Harvest too soon indoors for the most part.

Ah Just my thoughts on it.

Thanks for chiming in there, Bog and Sinful... you two definately have the smoking experience to back up your claims. A friend my age (24) and I have sort of agreed that once the herb gets to that frosty covered sticky level you're going to be pleased with the way you feel after two puffs... every other detail above that is conisseour (sp?) specific. Some guys like fruity tastes, others prefer piney... some like to get glued to the couch and zone, others prefer to fly to the moon. One thing's for sure though, I am most fond of my early experiences... and due to where I lived-- it was always schwag I was smoking. I know the homegrown stuffs better, but ah nostalgia... legends only grow bigger with time don't they.

Thanks again for the posts... keep 'em comin.

i started smoking in 1967.
so in the 70's i was quite over the newness and the nostalgia, lol.
the colombian gold really did kick ass. so did thai, exotic mex, vietnamese black, jamaican, and many others.

also, not all colombian was that commercial stuff that was most common in the 70's.
there was a good supply of old gold coming in as well for a while. that seemed to get harder to find later in the 70's.

i used to sell pounds of the commercial colombo, or what we called combo at the time and place, for 350 u.s.d.
but that wasn't as good as the gold buds which i would save for myself and close friends when i got it. in my area, the best gold colombo went for higher prices than commercial colombian.

and i haven't experienced that electric soaring high from the weed today.
very close to be sure.
very tastey hybrids going around these days for sure.

just don't discount the old kind weed as being only in the minds of old nostalgic hippies. we weren't stupid.

Funny thing - 30 years later I found some commercial c-bow in amsterdam - - the same dirty brown pot I must have sold a ton of (well...a bunch any ways  ) @ 425.00 a LB

Gold Bud came in several flavors as did the Red Bud -

I also had some Black Columbian (clamed) that was killer as well (one time deal from LA in 1977)

I sill get some MEX once or twice a year for 500.00 a LB that is a soaring great tasting sativa - we call it 'Hockey Puck' because of the way it comes across the border

Yeah, my older stoner pal cut his teeth (lungs...?) on the colombian, so it's good to hear from a truly authentic/less nostalgic perspective, thanks bug!

Fredster... we've been smoking something fairly similar to your "hockey puck" and that's how we got onto the topic of growing. Our stuff has almost a lemony taste... not bad... Very heavily seeded. I recomended we throw a few of those seeds in the ground, but he decided he wanted to do indoor with the best genetics. I think if I could put the hustle on it we might could still try an outdoor grow of that brick stuff... but from seeds I think I'd be too hard pressed to cull all the males. I should just talk that hard-headed bastard into getting some of that stuff growing alongside our grape punch babies--- sorry rambling again. Thanks again for all the posts.
