Garlic bulbs

I want to grow some garlic. The bulbs you buy to plant are a heck of a lot more expensive than buying some organic garlic, breaking up the bulb and planting that. Anyone know if you can do that with good results?

yes I started my garlic from an heirloom variety obtained at the farmers market. It is the hardneck variety, with numerous big cloves.

When you buy it at the store, you don't get the selection you would from say, Seed Savers.

There's also a general rule of thumb that you should plant on the shortest day of the year, harvest on the longest day. But my garlic planted earlier in the season (November) is looking a lot better right now.

Depending on your side of the equator, it might be a little too late. But it is worth a shot.

I'm going to plant some even if it doesn't finish. I'm putting in a bunch of red onions right now. I'm around 35 latitude and we're getting springlike weather now. Could get one or two more frosts. Just have to be patient. Thanks guys. This is so much better than buying it from a seed co, even if I mess it up.

Garlic requires a few frosts to promote bulb development. Sounds like its a great to plant!

Garlic is a "long season crop" so it likes over-wintering. We plant cloves into cell trays of coco in Nov. then plant outdoors in Feb/March.

Remove the flower stalks in mid-late summer. Then wait for the leaf to die back Then the bulbs will be ready to lift and harvest. Hang in a cool dry place.

I grow a Scottish variety because it is hardy,, during the last few years this variety homogenised itself to the local soil well. I also grow a few bulbs from Italian/mediterranean stock
