Storing seeds
What is the best method for storing seeds?
I'm currently storing my seeds in a pill bottle in my refrigerator? |

The best way I personally think. I keep all of my seeds in small containers, within a big food container. If you are using your main fridge, then anything(container) that will block out light is pretty kewl. Add a few grains of rice. Then you wrap up the plastic container in a plastic bag if it's big, or if they are like small film containers, then simply use a plastic storage food container. Keep the fridge at around 42F, and the humidity around 30, and all should be ok. I constantly have 100% germ rates with seeds from 4 years ago, doing it this way. And they pop before 24 hours, quicker than anything I have fresh, lol.
>>>I have a dedicated small fridge for all of my seeds, so I hardly ever open it, and have a temp and humidity monitor on it at all times. |

Here's my temps, it went up by a degree cause I opened it up. Here's a container that will go in. I will insert some cotton to fill it up, then eithe lpace this in a big plastic contain, or a thick plastic bag. But I use these plastic containers to dry my seeds with, as it has two lids, and I can simply take off the top one, and let my seeds dry for a few months before I ever put them in the fridge. And I don't have to worry about the seeds falling out, or getting mixed in with other seeds.

Seed storage
I keep my seeds inside small paper envelopes which are then placed inside a ziplock bag. They then are placed inside the freezer. Seeds can be kept for years inside the freezer and be viable.

Thanks for the info guys!
I've always kept my seeds in a light proof plastic container just on a shelf non-refrigerated... I have some older seeds that have always germinated fine for me... I got some leftover beans I want to store for awhile and may give flowerman's method a whirl... Should I add some rice and continue to use my same light proof container? TIA |

I hardly ever open my fridge, so it stays pretty dark in there as it is. I'll have to get a new fridge here shortly, as this one is getting pretty old. But I do love the small fridge for this purpose. Also if they are in like a small film container, you can always put them in a ziplock bag as well. |

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what purpose does the rice serve?
