Giant Sequoia

I took a 3 month vacation this year, well that's how it turned out. Anyways, I made a tour of the national parks for a month and purchased some Giant Sequoia seeds. The come in stealth packages that include a small zip lock bag that looks familiar.

The park ranger gave me some instructions and suggested that I germinate the seeds indoors and continue to grow them inside for 6-8 months due to the climate here where I live. While looking at the trees and reading the informative signposts, I learned that Giant Sequoia when growing close enough to one another will grow into one giant tree. There were examples of this in the park.

It was also noted that the tress grow about 1 foot per year for the 1st 10 years, after germination and then slow down to 6-8 inches. The seedlings should be transplanted every 6-8 months and will be ready and strong enough to go into their permanent home after 2 years.

Since the seeds are not guaranteed to grow, and can take up to 6 weeks to sprout and because I am trying to develop a grouping of 5 trees, that will eventually grow and blend together to form a single tree, the going is slow. I hope to have a few seedlings by Christmas.

I think it would be awesome to have a 200 foot tree with a 20 foot diameter trunk shadowing the neighborhood. The closest thing we have here are 2 pine trees that are close to 125 feet tall with a 5-6 foot diameter trunk that towers over everything in the area.

I'm glad they were not torn down when all the other trees were ripped out during the reconstruction. Those two trees are irreplaceable and in my opinion as close to historic as you can get.

I don't mean to rain on your parade... because I do think this is a real fun project... but by the time you expire from this world they'll still be babies... 200 ft at 6 inches per year is, oh, 400 or so years...

There is a great example of Sequoia's growing together in a town near me. They are on the corner of an intersection. They actually redesigned the intersection so they wouldnt have to take them out.

Oh. I forgot. I'm going to live forever.

I am aware of the time limits between me and the trees. As long as I get er done before I'm outta here, I'll have to accept my demise and hope that the any trees I plant will continue on after I have left.

Thanks for the input...

I still remember my visit to California back in the 70's to the Russian River area, I was told this is just about where the Sequoias natural range begins. I remember the larger ones were only about 8-10 feet around and about 90-120 feet tall, I would of loved to have been able to of traveled farther north to see the really big ones in person. My trip was limited to only a week and my sister tryed to show me as much of her area as she could in that time and still get married, I went there to "give" the bride away! I also got to see San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sosalito, the large cove-inlet where Alfred Hitchocks The Birds was filmed and we went on the winery tours with a large loaf of bread and a wheel of cheese Mabey I'll make it back there someday!

Props for bringing another few Great Sequioas to life!!!

They germinate n grow into some grass/weed lookin thing. ggrrr, sure there not supposed to look like that.. But go the 'big trees' i've got a Banyan tree growing in the hydro room. Doin super to, fkn MASSIVE, thick rubbery leaves goin on. Grew from seed, funny how such a big tree can grow from such a tiny little seed.

The Sequoia needles should be feathered and are not like ordinary fir or pine needles. As for the seeds, they should look similar to Elm seeds. kind of round and flat with a bump in the middle.

I agree. When you get up close, you can feel dwarfed. Glad to see someone else interested is rarer plants. I have a friend who does the cactus thing.

amazing thread.

Hmmm... I wonder if Sequoia can grow in the high desert plateau of northern New Mexico. You can still see remnants of an ancient forest around here.

I may have to try this.
