the last thing you want lettuce to do is go to seed. you need to keep it cool otherwise it bolts. if it bolts it wont form a head. it also gets really bitter. you only want this stuff to veg. no flower.

most cole crops can be turned over in a few [3-4] weeks. romaine takes significantly longer.

nft suits cole crops really really well.

I've wanted to get some styrofoam and try out aquaponics on top of the fishtank with lettuce. Would be a fun project. Love fresh greens

The commercial greenhouses running lettuce in aquaponics on styrofoam like terminalc mentioned are incredible. Ok, that might be an overstatement, but everytime I see the system they have going, I wonder what it would look like with a room full of 1' tall colas from clone.

Try growing bok choi- the small tender young heads are great and take up less space per pound of finished product than a loose non-heading lettuce, and a large bok choi is quite a lot of vegetable matter for the effort!

I saw that same show. It was amazing seeing a big operation like that. I too thought of the possibilities. Imagine the companies profits if they switched crops lol......
