I know a few retired US expats living in Ecuador on their social security alone. It's quite doable. Comfortably. Having a little extra means you can continue "living like a gringo" lol. The weather is amazing as are the people and the government is friendly. There are 6 climate zones so you can live in the heat or cold. Cuenca is popular because it's eternal spring weather. Although it's an emerging country (3rd world), it's at the front of the line for sure.

Weed is also legal. You can have 15gr on you.
