The Charas Thread

spicecowboy,
Sam: I also heard that, a long time ago, they only rubbed Charras from the plants in Afghanistan, as in any other ganja spot of the world.
I mean, this is the most natural way to make hash, and most likely the way hasmaking was originally invented.
Someone touched the buds of a Cannabis plant long enough to get a nice amount of resign sticking on the fingers, and the rest is history...

Maybe...
But how much rubbed hash do you see from Morocco? Or Lebanon? Or Pakistan? about as much as from Afghanistan, zero.
Rubbed hash was first for sure, but once sifting was invented, all the serious large commercial hash makers used sifting. It is a matter of the work involved, a single person can't make much more then a few tolas (tola=11 grams) of hand rubbed hash in a day. While a single person can sift kilos and kilos.

as well as the reasons mentioned above..........you won't see hand rubbing of plants in Middle Eastern countries, I'm guessing the reason is probably based on religious beliefs, as Muslims regard the left hand as unclean, so any charas would be unclean

Nice thread & very nice read!! :respect: for any contributer!!

Charras making, as hash making is indeed almost art form and can be done several ways, with several different grade end product!!!

I have personally smoked some Indian, Turkey, Egypt & Aghan made charras and I must say my favorite charras of all time goes between Turkey & Egypt!

^Every charras chunk I smoked in these countries were very heady smoke, which lead me to believe there are sativa genes in them. In fact.. I witnessed nice mountainslope full of cannabis plants. The bigger & thinner leaved plants were at the bottom of the slope and really looked like sativas if my lousy memory still serves me correct :chin: Only unfortunate thing was that I wasnt an in those daze, so I didnt pay too much notice to those plants, or seeds from them

Also, I think we should discuss more about different curing methods of charras & gardah, as storing also and how they affect on flavor/taste/potency!

Btw, just rubbed me a nice little chunk from two Neville´s Haze plants yesterday which was combined with harvest/trimming charras of Triangle x [NLxLeopard Kush] x Pure Kush = :yummy: I really cannot wait to try it after couple week cure

peace

so much for my left hand theory...lol..

btw I've never heard of Egyptian hand rub

but apart from India, these different charases would of been the exception rather than the norm, wouldn't they?...were these hand rubbed hashes home made or commercial?

as for the up high, it's also possible they rubbed plants in early ~ mid-flowering and it was fresh?

and please tell us some more about your hash travels....it's always great to read first hand descriptions and thoughts on places from the past where ganja is or used to be widespread

Happy dry sifting

Hola Chamba

Im sorry for your "left hand -theory" :biglaugh:

However, you did justifie your theory pretty good...

About my "hashtravels"... I havent made any hashtravels yet, but my experiences are always limited to holidays. Turkey would be only expection, because I spend some time there at late 90´s as a quest of my Turkish friend. He did bring me to his homevillage where I saw this gunjaslope :D Im at the belief that the Turkish charras wasnt commercial, because I received it from this particular village and my friends family was also smoking it. However, I cannot be sure about that...

Egyptian charras was also very nice, it wasnt so heady than the Turkish one, but still very heady (if you didnt smoke it too much)

I bought couple different qualitys of Egyptian charras and they all were commercial. They have great smoking culture in Egypt, I really did love that vibe over there + I got the opportunity to join "traditional" hashnight with my local friend & his friends! These guys were smoking heavy and they do start smoking about 00.00 - 1.00 am and keep puffin them shiishas for whole night & morning. After that they go in their jobs for the day & evening and sleep couple hours and repeat the same :D

Indian & Afghan charras has always been imported and I havent never visited these countries!

I used to get these big chunks of black Afghan charras. They were sold 80 G at a time and were almost impossible to handle after getting used to midgrade Moroccon drysift. I would say they were commercial charasses for import..

However, I really do think that I havent smoked them better qualitie charrasse´s from India, but they have always been very pleasant & strong stuff anyway.

I have to go now, hope this helped little

Was this about 7 years ago bro? :p Used to have loads of that stuff, "gold seal" lmao it was veeeeeeery stony afghan, was very hard to smoke you had to have long fingernails and pick tiny pieces of it for an hour to get a joint or bowlful...lol, we calle it transsipaki, Trance Paki in english, I speak savo, one of the oldest and most difficult languages on earth..lmao...but that was it man I used to sell it, they cant acuse ,e of anything anymore it was years ago lol, but I believe we talk about the same hash....I always had this feeling that there was a lil extra in it, kinda strange gummy black tar ind of substance that makes you feel a bit..more...than just cannabis resin...? :p It sure was strange. But very powerful. Couldnt move anywhere, all the basic afghan I have had ever since was very much like some of the commercial charas you get from coffeeshops, not the beautiful melty ones made very gently that smell like heaven when you break them, talking about charas like they had at Greenhouse last april, I smoked the whole damn fresh (read=wet) piece in one bowl, must have been like 3 grams or so, a good piece anyway. I just got carried away, this 3 month cured OHxSk#1 has those effects.

You guys are really.....really..killing me. I have never had the chance to smoke hash from anywhere but here :(...usually commercial grade stuff. However since becoming interested in growing I have had some of the hand rubbed stuff off of a plethora of mistakes...he he. Here we call it hippie crack, a name we heard b4 we started supporting our own needs. The rubber glove technique is excellent and will be used from now on in any harvest!!!! Great thread, I am about to reread,...Much Love

Yeah FJ, I would say that 7 years is quite accurate  However, those effects you described didnt match. This was extremely black shiny hash that did give you well balanced high (I remember correctly..). The first times we managed to smoke it -> we over done it, badly .D I said that, because it really was hard to handle!

But about this Paki trance you was talking.. This was after millennium? Then I had supposed Paki that was very mutch the same than your description. It really was "nail you on the couch" type of goo, which was really pleasant to smoke;) And if you made the mistake that you even blinked your lighter under it -> it came impossible to hande :biglaugh:

I really agree with you that it had something extra on it :D I would say O because it really did act the same when heated.. This was really expectional hash that really had good amount of O in it! The "Ohashe´s" dont usually have much O in them, not at least in those batches that came up here north. This truly was exception;)

Can you remember these blonde hash sticks and where did they come from & what was the name of them? They had these white spots inside when you break em? It was very expectional hash, the kind of drysifted hash that doesnt need anything laced on it! It was crazy stuff :D I really cannot remember what they was called, but I have this belief they were called Thai Stick´s! Of course they didnt have anything to do it with the original budsticks, than the fact they were laced heavily.

^This^ was on mid-late 90´s, also at the time there were these sticks. Extremely blonde, quite same looking than these laced one´s, but they were strictly made of cannabis resin! Very expectional quality, maybe even the best hash I have ever smoked! They really seemed like they were made with love! I think these were sold at 8 G sticks, while the laced ones were little thinner and were on 4 G sticks. They both were very limited batches!

Damn man, I really do miss those daze..

Did forget this on previous post..

The Afghan I was first talking about that came in 80 G chunks, had this kind of qualities you describe, while transsipaki ( :D) didnt smell exactly like heaven should I say :biglaugh: I really cannot remember any accurate odors, but could it be this TrancePaki had little earthines in it?

But about your 3 G Afghan bowl  Man you are crazy :biglaugh: However, it´s very nice to have this kind of sessions once in awhile

I also do think that the OH x SK#1 changes it´s potency dramatically after good cure! I smoked last week the last bit of 1 year 3 months cured OH x SK#1 and it was quite couclock with almost drunken head effect :yoinks: Still have full jar of OH x SK#1 that has been curing from summer :yummy: The odor is incredible, as the high also, but I notice it has started to affect more body also..

This is a strain that can offer very clear head high, depending when harvested and I simply do love it!!

And btw FJ, dont worry about LEO, you are family man nowadays who doesnt sell and hasnt sell for years + they cannot prosecute you on these after 6 years, because the charges get old

Haha, I know they cant do shit to me ;) except ruin my career as a businessman but they already did that, lost my job etc. :D And hell that bowl was of Greenhouses crappy manali charas, if it sizzles theres water in it and it was almost green, well, they are the GREENhouse. lol. Well, now, even that piece would make me happy, had a short pause in growing, less than a month because we were selling the house but in the end we didnt, im happy about not leaving but very pissed that I dont have much to smoke now that I am runnin out of old stash and we smoked all the last harvest in 4 weeks. Gotta grow more. :D And more. Should I take a few cuts of the Haze for you? Im going south in a few weeks again, let me know, sorry for the hijack.

The best hash I have ever smoked was the finger hash I made when trimming my ZamalHaze lady. I don't use scissors, just my fingers to trim and made a lovely balls of finger hash. It blew me away, had the same effects and tastes as the ZH bud but intensified like 5x. I remember just sitting there, completely smashed, listening to the Rolling Stones and wondering how I could be so high from one joint.

My theory is, exceptional sativas make exceptional finger hash, all the best pieces of finger hash I've made have been from sativas. Some of the indica pieces have been very nice, but sativa finger hash always seems to be better for some reason. My herijuana finger hash didn't seem any stronger than the Herijuana buds, strangely, whereas sativa finger hash is always much stonger than the buds.

The strongest hash I've ever bought was a ten quid deal from an old West Indian fella in Bradford back in 1997 (I think). It might have been 'gum' the finger/scissor/knife hash they make in the carribean, it might have been some kind or garda or charas from India/Pakistan/Nepal/Afghanistan region. Whatever it was, it was one of the darkest pieces of hash I have ever handled, and one of the softest. The potency was very very strong, absolute wipeout smoke, plenty of cerebral high but a majorly crippling body stone. I remember tryign to walk home after an all-night session smoking the stuff and couldn't walk properly, it was like my legs wouldn't work. I could only walk by taking really small, shuffling steps. I hate to think how I looked to anyone that saw me, like a crackhead probably. That 10 quid deal was a good 5g and has to be the best hash deal I've ever had.

Where has all the really good hash gone? I've not seen any squidgy black, gold seal or red seal in the UK since the 90s, saw some nice Afghan last year that had gold coloured residue on one side of the flat block, but I don't think it was the real gold seal I remember so well. In Amsterdam, all the Afghan black and charas/manali, whatever they brand it, is just nto as good as it was ten years ago. Nol Van Shaik says it's because most of it is fucked with in Russia before reaching Amsterdam, he might be right. I remember Nol showing me some Afghan he'd just bought that when he pulled the large piece in half, it was sticky and green in the middle, stank of black afghan hash. Nol said it was getting hard to find proper, unadulterated hash like that lump these days, he blamed the Russians, the hash travels through Russia from Afghanistan and on the way the Russiab criminal gangs adulterate it.

I hate to think of some of the adulterants I must have smoked over the years, I;m sure there is wax of some kind added to some of the black soft hash in Amsterdam these days, I've seen pieces of black hash hold a flame like a candle and had waxy residue on my fingers after handling the hash, not the stickiness you should get, more of a shininess and smoothness to your finger tips.

I left another forum for UK growers in disgust because they were openly posting recipes for making your own 'soapbar' these assholes were taking hash powder made from bubbling or sifting, and mixing it 50/50 with crap like boot polish and coffee powder and smoking it, saying buds were too strong and they wanted soapbar but without the vinyl, motor oil etc. They were teaching others how to make it and when I screamed it was wrong, I got bitterly attacked.

I love hash but there's sod all proper hash to be had these days, you have to search for it and it isn't easily found. I must have walked 10 miles in Amsterdam last visit looking for really good hash, I won't buy the stupidly expensive ice hasj, I want proper, quality exotic import hash that some russian fuck hasn't shit on. First time I went to Amsterdam in 1994 there was a whole raft of commercial stuff like Power Plant and Superskunk, but almost everywhere had decent to great imported hash and lots of places had lovely imported herbs - I remember fondly the days when you could buy really good Nigerian, Thai, Jamaican etc. I once found a tiny little coffeeshop way out near the A10 ringroad in the southeast corner of the city a few blocks past the Amstel brewery on a little leafy side street that specialised in African and Asian herbs. This was before they would only sell you 5g in one go so I bought some of just about everything they had, I remembur they had Durban, Malawi and Nigerian, and something from Tanzania. they had a few different types of hash and the African woman who owned the place gave me a thumbnail-sized piece of African hash. She was from Ghana and she said the hash was made by her family back home, her personal stash, she didn't sell it in the shop. It was fantastic stuff, you could stretch it like silly putty and if you stretched it thin enough it was opaque.

I managed to find the street again two years ago and the coffeeshop is still there but under new ownership, they had a maroon coloured sign with gold arabic lettering and the place was full of arabs. There were a dozen arabs outside (it was August) and when I went to enter, they stopepd me and pointed me back down the street and kept saying 'go'. A sign of our changing world, before 9/11 folks were much friendlier!

I suppose the rule of thumb nowadays with hash is if it isn't really good, it's been messed with in some way. I know there is jaw-droppingly awesome hash out there, finding it is too hard these days, I guess you need to know the right people. I can't wait to go back to Nol's in Haarlem and ask Nol what really nice black hash he has.

Neville's Haze dry sieve

Old pic but boy, all I can say is carrots :D was fantastic, always a pleasure to use sativas for hashmaking, indicas just dont do the trick for me and many of these modern strains just dont reach the level that lets say even that NH was at...not to even mention what we get when we clean the stuff thats left in the buckets where OHxSk#1 buds have been curing. Cream.

One time i made 13 moonballs of charas from a 2004 A'dam grow experiment to research, select and breed new varieties. The lavender charas was a dark lavender hue, the NLxHaze charas was a Golden Amber swirl hue, the oranje bud charas was an orange hue, the Hindu Kush charas was a greenish hue, the Buddhas sister charas was a golden yellow hue, the somaskunk charas was a greenish gold swirl hue, the nigerian was a purple black hue, the nycd was a maroon amber swirl hue, the ice was a greyish hue etc... etc... etc..

the grey chapaties i mentioned earlier were definetely naturally grey and was some of the most mold free charas I have ever seen. When the chapaties were kneaded out to be more thin it was a translucent greyish thc resin you can see. Over time a ~gram sized piece got darker on the outside from heat&air. I think this grey color in the trichomes is based on the variety and maturity as in just in between when the trichomes go from clear to a more harder foggy glass color and then to gold and amber.
i think it may be nice to have a discussion about good color for charas. I love the colors of most quality maroc, oranje->maroon->brass->gold->amber, though charas is often more dark. Especially when it has been cured or rubbed hard causing oxidization of the trichomes. I think a nice translucent golden maroon amber hue is my favorite. Though diversity is what makes the earth beautiful.

Here is some dry finger rubbed hasj i just made for this post as I smoked any of the old hasj being discussed. It was rubbed from old dry material so just the bigger ball made from Buddha's sister has some translucence... not enough though. I think I cannot say it is charas because the material rubbed was not fresh. i say it is dry finger hasj because no water or saliva was used to get it off my fingers... i doubt there is finger oils in it either because my fingers were coated before from building a spliff and there was a layer that i leave on my forefinger and thumb. At least it is the desired hue.
ii give thanks

i am going to smoke some with some citrus haze and very nice clean soft and dry balkan rolling tobbacco as i just smoked some in a glass sipsi and a chillum waiting for the cam/comp/site to work. I roll it in these clear papers i make.
They are the real 100% hemp clear papers made w/ BHO:

by the way... i can remember that super black (golden inside) afghan from ~7 years ago. I think what headz were saying about the high was true. It was kinda more stoney then high even though it kept you wide awake thru to dawn it can make you shaky and one time I was in a university and I cut my finger with a diving knife cutting off gram sized pieces for half the freakin student body @ 4 am while trying to write term papers!
Really brings back memories....ahhh... yes... I remember those days as if they were yesterday. Thanks for reminding me about the black afghan from ~7 years ago. I stayed once @ 53 Bloemgracht right above The Paradox coffeeshop that had afghan for cheap...needless to say we ended up smoking it then too out of the fact that it was right there I used to go in whenever i smoked up all my papers or used up all the bathroom tissue hehe... needless to say I bought the afghan out of guilt and poverty. When I bought some in the states though I was very happy to run into it.

Home-made Charas

Home-made Charas

Charas, a substance that is hand-rubbed directly from the cannabis plant,… (wiki)

The only method using adhesiveness of a resin.

Finger hash and scissors hash seems to be the same. And sticky debris that covers inner side of mason jar after buds are gone. Usually it comes to me as a small concomitant benefit prize to any hand work on resinous buds.

The idea is to catch a resin onto a flat glass instead of fingers and to scrape it off instead of traumatic and incomplete hand-rubbing.

The test device is made from inox cooltube fitting (L 10cm/ 4” Dia 15 cm / 6”) as a speeding-up chamber and two flat glass covers as a catchers. I fixed details by hands while using.

picture.php

I decomposed two fresh mid buds harvested this morning into clasters with scissors and loaded.

picture.php

Shake hard trying to provide a strong clashes of a loaded stuff against a glass catcher cover.
Fresh doesn’t dust. After 1-2 mins we have a print on a glass.

picture.php

Resin prints of smeared glands and some whole ones..

picture.php

picture.php

A pile, a chunk and a pivot.

picture.php

picture.php

picture.php

picture.php

Second run gives less smeared glands but more whole ones and more garbage as green particles, pistils and even a little wing.

picture.php

picture.php

Second run pile finger pressed to glass and a chunk.

picture.php

picture.php

Third run is the most hairy and small

picture.php

At this moment two first chunks were test-smoked and I decided to make quick (3 mins + 3 mins) amber from a bud debris and mix it with 3d charas chunk.
First (3 mins) run of ethanol extraction is always good looking. I suppose the amber color bleeds from dry red pistils into light yellow virgin resin.

picture.php

Second (3 mins) is also stone but smaller and darker. Mix of amber and 3d charas.

It's boiling while heated by fire.

another way to make charas is to strip naked, and run thru ur cannabis garden, frolicking as much as possoible, and thencollect the resin from your body.. note.. i would wax myself b4 doing this, dont wanna smoke hair.. I bet that charas u made is dank jump, all one puff of it

S

Sir_Nugget

what if u used a stove top popcorn maker to stir around buds, and then collect the resin from the container.. an electric ice cream making machine could work also, and the trichs would be kept cold

Looks very nice but to me charas is made from live plants standing in the soil you method is fine but its like marok style just without a mesh

I think that the flavor off charas is due to both the plant, and fore charas alive plants, the enviroment and the process, rubbing, breaking the trichome glands.

Just my 50 cents
