LED Grow Results: Grams per Watt

I thought it would be cool to have a thread where people can document their gpw using LED lighting.

I hope this doesn't turn into a huge LED vs HID debate, but I fear it will...

I realize everyone wants to achieve 1 gram per watt, but when I was growing (with HPS/scrogging) I averaged about .6 grams per watt. The best I ever did was about .85 watts per gram.

I have a WEX-C150 LED unit currently growing jalapenos. I currently can't grow, so I have no personal LED measurements yet (jalapenos it is for now). ;) However, I really expect my 150 watt LED unit to produce about .75 gpw when I get a chance to use it. 12 plants (sog) would only need to produce about 9 grams per plant for that result. I believe that is doable.

Oh well, I do have about six different grow thread links to start the thread off. Before each link I also listed the total wattage and gpw.

So I ask you LED growers to join this thread and let everyone know how your LED grows are producing...

let's see what you all have done with LEDs...

HGL Brand LED units

3 x 5-gallon DWC buckets, 1 plant each
318w LED unit, approx 4oz
approx 0.35g/w

4 x 5-gallon DWC buckets, 1 plant each
318w LED unit, approx 4oz
approx 0.35g/w

1 3x3 ebb+flow table, 6 started, all killed except one due to males or gimps
318w LED + 345w LED (the last 4 weeks I added 2x20w 2ft Fluoros and a single 42w CFL to cover some dead areas). approx 13.5g*
approx 1.18g/w*

*OH MAN MAJOR EDIT: Rives kindly pointed out to me a few errors in my post. I put 13.5g instead of 13.5oz which it should have been. More importantly, the g/w is also wayyyy off. It should not be 1.18g/w, the real g/w would be .57 if calculated using only the LED listed wattage (LED listed power, not actual power draw. Fluoros not counted. 378 grams / 663 total watts = .57 g/w). Quite less impressive numbers, oh well. Thanks Rives!

The change in my methods and equipment, problems I faced during each run and other variables make me think these numbers are completely inconsequential. Before I ran LED I had a 400w HPS, which I also pulled approx 4 oz off of. I could have definitely done things better in every run, I'm still learning though, just trying not to make the same mistake 2 times. If I hit 1.18g/w in that last run I definitely think I could hit 1.3-1.4. I learned a lot from that last run. Pruning lower stuff early is a must for the units I have, since they don't penetrate below the canopy. I should have clipped everything below a certain level, which I didn't, and it meant I ended up with a lot of popcorn bud and sugar trim bait. The LED was able to produce sufficiently large buds on top. Maybe not 1000w or Sun big, but not small.

why do you anticipate such better results from your ebb+flow grow? the added flouros?

do you have a thread of any of these grows?

i really want to see what people are doing with just LEDs, but glad you joined the discussion...

I don't think the added fluoros had much to do with it actually. That run the plant got way too big and I had to raise the lights up all the way and move them out a little bit, it left a part in the middle and a corner that were underlit. Neither of my fluoro fixtures could have really lit a significant amount of the canopy, which was probably slightly more than 4x4 in surface area. I think the significantly better yeild that run just came from experience. I was training the plant better, pruning better, being more attentive with the nutes, and it was the first time I was growing from a seed.

i agree that experience in training, pruning, etc... does make a difference.

1.18 gpw is real nice. keep up the good work. :headbange :good:

Wet or Dry? I got 100 grams (sans main stem) under a UFO 90 from Sunshine Systems, but dry was only 9 grams. I am sure my grow method had a lot to do with it

100 wet and 9 dry???

that 9 must have been very dry...

Supposedly fluorescent lights do little or nothing for flowering, so I doubt that had much of an impact. My guess is the extra LED was the main factor, in addition to growing experience.

Under the scenario that AK-51 presented, the fluoros probably didn't contribute much (too far away), but whoever told you that fluoros did little or nothing for flowering was incorrect. I have had very good luck with PL-L's in a scrog format, so T5's should be equally effective.

you guys are gonna like this one going on... haha

I did some autos under a lumigrow, and am finishing some under a GLH led. the problem is it seemed the autos stayed very small ( maybe from the blue light ) and the varying phenos, I had squat, tall, and in-between. and I wasn't running a full house, only some on the side of my veg tent.. so really no GPW with me yet. I do have a full house with some DJ strains under a lumigrow, look out for it in the DJ section in a couple months.

the problem with calculating GPW, is users, style, environment, and lets not forget strain. but any info is better then no info..

would love to see more grows though, as I believe LED is here to stay

I'm pretty sure I got that from a random grow guide I found online, been reading quite a few of those and honestly half of them are a off I think.

Still don't think fluorescent is a good way to go for flowering, did you even yield 1oz per plant?

Thanks! Before getting a dry weight I didn't want to be overly optimistic, I had pretty much convinced myself that I was going to be pulling off 5-6oz to be on the very very safe side. I didn't want to think I was getting 20oz and pull 10 right? Anyway I was very happy with how it turned out. Anyway, if anybody is interested how it looked, this is basically how things were set up near the end:

picture.php

You really don't get a sense by looking at that picture how cramped it really was in there. I flipped things into flower way too late, and as a result those lights are pretty much as high as they can possibly be. That's in a 5x5 tent with a 3x3 ebb and flow table. Branches were reaching all the way out to the back and right sides, and stuff had grown underneath the fan and ducting. The 42w CFL on the right was added because things were growing out of the effective footprints of the lights. There were buds over there that were already half developed, already the plant had put energy and time into making, cutting them off would be a waste, but I couldn't really jam them in any closer so I threw that CFL over that particular area to keep them going. I was hoping that even if it couldn't make them gain much more mass then it could at least support them maturing in terms of trichome color and whatnot. The 2ft fluoros were added more or less because I had them and it wasn't going to hurt anything. I'm sure they did help some, to what degree I don't know. This run was in the winter so heat was absolutely not an issue.

Also more on topic:
Like I kind of said before, I think I can do much better than that run as far as g/w. There were a number of mistakes that I made that could have had a big impact on the end result. I had a lot of popcorn bud that just went into the sugar trim bucket for bubble hash. Sugar trim is inevitable, but to me all the light airy popcorn bud that I didn't trim off represents a mistake. Hash is good, but all the energy that the plant put into making those little buds could have been directed towards making the main ones bigger. LST'ing was done too late in the game, near the end I was doing it compltely out of desperation because I didn't have any more vertical space. Earlier, when I realized that thing were going to get way big I disassembled the PVC stand that was holding up my table and built an adjustable stand out of those perforated metal corners right under it, it was kind of tricky. While I was building it the table was just resting on a stack of buckets, I kept having this vision of bumping it and the whole thing tipping over and spilling hydroton all over. I think this run I was really on the ball as far as nute changes and pH adjustments goes. The placement of the plant was not ideal either. The table started off with 6 plants from seeds. I killed 5 and only one finished. After all the males were killed the one was just taking over everything, there was no point in keeping the other females alive because they just couldn't keep up. I could probably have used more fresh air. There was very little fresh air exchange with the room or the tent. I don't have any way to monitor co2, but I'm sure it was pretty low in there as it was an unoccupied room with a door that was almost always closed. Right now I have a 1000w HPS running in my tent. I didn't sell or get rid of my LED units, I just like learning and trying new things.

I wound up with just shy of 1/4 lb (109 grams) from 2 plants under 330 watts (6x55w). I had some pretty serious issues - the clones had root aphids when I got them, and then I tried a just-add-water soil mix that ran out of steam about the 3rd week of flowering. It then took me a while to figure out how to feed them (I use blumats) without overdoing whatever nutrients that were still working in the soil. PL-L's are incredibly bright, 55 watts will give 4800 initial lumens - check out the following link for the "club".

i'm now watching your kessil grow ;)

and i agree with your statement, as I too believe the LED is here to stay.

i also believe that LEDs will continue to take market share away from HID lighting. LEDs are cost prohibitive for a lot of folks, but as prices come down, more will enter the arena... :2cents:

Did you grow before using LED? What kind of gpw were you getting before?
