you reckon the atmosphere up there is dense enough to hang glide? or would you just go flailing off the mountain to an early death?

Depends on the wing loading. At 18,000 ft the air is 1/2 as thick as at sea level, and gets thinner as you go up.

Here is a view you can't get by looking out the cockpit window...

Cheethas turn quikly by rotating their tails which cancels rotational inertia and minimizes torque
