My First Shot at Organic Growing

R

!RA!

So this is my first attempt with organic soil and growing. I have 3 strains started from seed that I've never run before. Doing Rare Dankness Ghost Train Haze #1 and Star Killer as well as Cali Connection Girl Scout Cookies. Since I'm new to this I started with premixed and cooked soils and teas from TLO Soils. I also have some re-vegged Sour Sage clones that I ran in coco using Lucas Formula before that are loving the live soil.

They all started out in TLO Mellow Mix, which is basically 1 part organic soil mix, 1 part coco coir and 1 part perlite. They were only fed RO water. The 2 Rare Dankness strains and the Girl Scout Cookies all germinated from seed in this, and the Sour Sage clones started in this as well. 90% germination on the seeds, so pretty happy about that. They all got a little wilted after reaching about 3" tall, so I gave them some TLO tea made for seedlings and clones and they perked right up (see pics below).

The Sour Sage clones grew really fast and I transplanted them into 1 gal. containers with The Rev's Master Mix 2.1 with a little high N layering blend and they really took off. The pic below shows them at 3 weeks in Master Mix. Noticed some fungus gnats a few days ago, so I let the soil dry a bit, then added yellow sticky traps and a food grade diatomaceous earth top layer and they seem to be disappearing.

So far so good with the TLO soils and their guy D has been super helpful. Stay tuned, will update throughout the grow. Here's a link to TLO if anyone's interested: http://www.truelivingorganic.com/

The light is about 14" above them and there is a fan just out of sight. They seem a lot healthier and happier in the organic soil than they ever did in coco. The coco was a good learning experience though, was able to see and diagnose some nute deficiencies. Haven't seen any at all since starting them in soil. Not claiming it's infallible, but so far so good.

If you do have any problems, soil wise, just transplant them up a size or two, :tiphat:

Thanks doc, I heard the same thing from another grower so it sounds like good advice. The Sour Sage will be going into 5 gal Smart Pots next week so the roots can stretch out. Will post up on progress periodically.

So this is my first attempt with organic soil and growing.

I'm interested in doing organic soil too. Keep the info coming, I want to see how this turns out for you. What did you use before, and what was you deciding factors to go organic? Thanks for the link too, I'll go check it out.

Good luck & have fun

Hey fuggzt, I was using coco before with Lucas Formula. Basically General Hydroponics Flora Micro and Flora Bloom, plus a little CalMag. A few things made me decide to go this route. 1. I tried some organically grown herb and the taste and effect were night and day different. Not that the coco stuff was at all bad, but the organic was way better. Even with my limited experience I noticed it pretty easily. 2. Here in CO, organic herb tends to fetch a much higher price in the dispensaries than hydro grown, so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks so. Our market has been very saturated for a few years and people are used to getting really good stuff and are willing to pay for it.

That alone is a great reason. I 'm sad to say, but I doubt Ive ever had organic buds. I can only imagine taking my favorite tasting bud, and making it better. :smokeit: Well time to go drool over some bud porn now.

Good luck & have fun

The seedlings are definitely getting bigger and more healthy since starting the tea. Stems are thicker, more leaves and no more propping them up. The Sour Sage teens are about ready to go into larger pots and flip to 12/12. Here they are:

Right on man, I'll be around for the duration too. I've always wanted to grow out Sour Sage too but just haven't gone out of my way to find a cut. They are definitely ready to get potted up to 5 gallons. I would try 7 gallons though if you have the space for it though. I noticed a difference from always running 5 gallons and making the jump to 7's. If you want to make clones too now would be a good time and you could lop off all those lower sucker branches that need to come off anyways. That has been my problem in the past, not being judicial enough with the lower branches and ending up with too much larf.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing on those lower branches. It might be cloning time. They're all under a single Eye Blue MH, that's where they'll stay the whole way through.

Are you going to run out of head room? If it were me, I'd top them to half their current height. Good luck. -granger

Yeah, this strain will bust through the ceiling. I've used a weighted horizontal trellis/screen before to manage height.

Transplanted & Flipped Today

Transplanted & Flipped Today

Today was the day for transplanting the Sour Sage and flipping them to 12/12. Moved them from their 1 Gal containers to 5 Gal. In case anyone's wondering what's in the soil I put a link below showing how the TLO containers are built. Too much to rewrite here, so take a look if you're interested. Here they are in their new homes:

Hi RA.
Those TLO buckets look pretty cool. I've decided to go the organic route also. It's going to take longer than planned to get the garden going, so I'll be mixing my own soil. However the tlo system looks cool for the future. 12/12!!! Ready to start showing off their lady parts?

They're not 21 yet, I'd probably get in trouble for that!

Just a suggestion, as I just had 3 feet of water in my basement a couple weeks ago. You may want to get that ballast up off the floor, it would have saved me some $ if I had, lol. You may not get 3 feet, but electronics and water are a bad mix, entertaining maybe, but still, a very bad mix, lol :tiphat:
