Police said a package containing 2 1/2 pounds of marijuana was delivered from Eureka, Calif., to the suburban Kentucky home of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson on Tuesday, where authorities say they conducted a search and allegedly found 6 more pounds of marijuana inside.
Michelle Gregory, spokeswoman for the California Department of Justice, confirmed to the Cincinnati Enquirer a report written by CaliforniaWatch.org, a group of investigative journalists, on Wednesday night, which detailed the operation. It was initiated by a special marijuana task force after agents discovered a suspicious package at a commercial sorting facility in Sacramento.
Simpson's teammate, offensive tackle Anthony Collins, was also present when a woman, identified as Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package on Tuesday. All three were questioned at the residence, but no arrests were made at the time.
Police allegedly found other empty parcels, scales and packaging material inside Simpson's home.
"The house was set up as a potential distribution network," said Tommy LaNier, head of the National Marijuana Initiative, a group that is funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and helps coordinate marijuana enforcement operations around the United States. "They had it all set up to receive supplies of high-grade marijuana from Northern California, and from there, it was being distributed from that residence."
All the packages were sent from an area of Northern California known as the "Emerald Triangle," LaNier said. The area is known for producing large amounts of marijuana.
Simpson had four catches for 136 yards last week in a 24-22 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Package of marijuana tracked to house of Bengals' Simpson

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ohio - Authorities swooped in on a house owned by Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson after a package containing 2.5 pounds of California marijuana was allegedly delivered to the home. Investigators found 6 more pounds of pot inside the home, says Michelle Gregory, spokeswoman for the California Department of Justice.

Gregory confirmed the information that CaliforniaWatch.org, a group of investigative journalists, broke on Wednesday after local reporters heard persistent rumors about the incident.
Gregory said Simpson and Bengals teammate Anthony Collins were present when a woman, identified as Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package Tuesday at Simpson's home. Authorities detained Simpson and Collins, but no one was arrested, Gregory said. Simpson told police he lived at the residence and gave officers consent to search the premises, Gregory said.
Officers also seized drug paraphernalia such as "packaging materials, scales and smoking devices."
"The house was set up as a potential distribution network," Tommy LaNier, head of the National Marijuana Initiative, told CaliforniaWatch. The NMI is funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and helps coordinate marijuana enforcement operations around the United States.
"They had it all set up to receive supplies of high-grade marijuana from Northern California, and from there, it was being distributed from that residence," LaNier said.
About 10 p.m. CT Wednesday, authorities made a "wellness check" on Simpson's Mansion Place residence, according to the Kentucky State Police's Dry Ridge post.
Further details on the incident were not released early Thursday. The case will be addressed later Thursday by the Kenton County Prosecutor's Office, police said.
Gregory told The Enquirer that California authorities routinely track suspected marijuana packages but this is the first time, to her knowledge, a tracked package of marijuana led to the home of an NFL player.
The path leading to Simpson's residence began Sept. 19, Gregory said.
A narcotics unit devoted to detecting and tracking suspected marijuana shipments flagged a package, which originated in Eureka, Calif., at a Sacramento shipping center. California authorities then alerted Kentucky law enforcement agencies about the package, and they kept an eye on it while it was delivered, Gregory said.
Gregory wouldn't describe what characteristics of the package aroused suspicions.
As of late Wednesday, authorities were still trying to figure out what agency could handle a possible prosecution and what happens next. She said an investigation was continuing. Any of a number of federal, local or state agencies in California or Kentucky could take over the case, she said.
Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said the team was aware of the reports but did not offer any other comments.
Neither player is from California. Both Collins, from Texas, and Simpson, from North Carolina, are in their fourth years with the Bengals. Simpson was drafted in the second round in 2008 and has emerged as one of the team's starting wide receivers. He had a career-high 136 yards on four receptions in last Sunday's loss at Denver.
Collins, a fourth-round pick, did not play in the Denver game. Listed as a backup left tackle, he has started 16 games during his career.
Under NFL rules, both Collins and Simpson could be subject to discipline under the league's substance abuse and personal conduct policies. Drug testing was suspended during the league's lockout but restarted when it ended in late July.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed that violations of law when drugs are concerned would make both players subject to discipline under both policies.
Calls to Collins' and Simpson's agents were not returned.
However, both Simpson and Collins did participate in Wednesday's practice in preparation for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Yeah really. The Bengals sucks balls, but that's irrelevant. The stupid fuck could have bought local and likely would not have been busted. The Bengals always draft/sign the stupidest bastards.

okay you have a multi-million dollar contract along with a mansion, etc. - WHY are you re-selling weed? Sounds like they were repackaging it and slangin zips or something. Why the Hell would they do that? Sounds like some kids I knew in high school who basically just sold weed to make friends or to be around people.

Why would he be selling weed when that could bring unwanted attention to his dogfighting ring?

These guys are fucking morons and no amount of money will change that.

Another case of stupid is as stupid does. Why a guy makes gazillions playing ball would sell weed is beyond me. You can take the athlete out of the ghetto, but you can't get the ghetto out of the athlete. Or make them any smarter.
kinda like the BBall players in Portland Or a few years ago busted for driving a bright yellow hummer 80mph in a 55 while smoking weed out of a soda can. Stupid is as stupid does.
Arne't most all pro sports figures college educated, seems they don't learn much.

never actually states he is selling weed; how many of you keep a scale, a bong and ziplock baggies at your own house?? does that make you a small time weed dealer??
i seriously, seriously doubt he was selling weed; and if he was... so fucking what??!! 95% of the people on this website sell pot.

we need to legalize this shit!! you know how many NFL players have a fridge full of beer at their house??? or how many pain pills those motherfuckers are on!!!!!

dude probobly just got sick of all the fucking shwag in OH; so he needed his own head stash;
but using the postal service to deliver pounds of pot... to your personal mansion... not the brightest idea in the world....

6lbs for personal? Amazing that he can get off the couch, much less run around and catch a ball.

Im not saying that weed should be illegal, but it is. And the fact is that these NFL team owners dont want these dope smoking law breakers portraying their teams (that they pay up to a billion $'s for) in a negative light.

95% of people on this site may sell pot, but 0% of the people on this site have multi-million dollar NFL contracts.

The point is, that if someone is willing to sign you to a 20 million dollar contract, dont fuck it up.

He was selling it. He was taking a stupid risk for peanuts compared to the amount of money someone else was paying him to keep his nose clean. I dont care if he smokes weed, his coaches prolly dont even care if he smokes it on occasion as long as he keeps it on the downlow. BUT the dumb mutherfucker was selling it and got caught. Thus casting a negative light on himself, his team, and most importantly the trillion dollar entity known as the NFL. The organization paying him millions of dollars to catch a ball.

So,
Has he done anything wrong morally? No
Has he done anything wrong legally? Kinda
Has he done anything stupid? YES

doubt he got much playing time anyways. Think he's a benchwarmer. I didn't see it mention if it was UPS/fedex etc.. and did anyone sign for the package? If not, they probably wouldn't have got in trouble if they denied it and didn't have weed and paraphernalia in the house to begin with.

Looked it up.. said he signed a 4 year 3 million dollar deal 2-3 years ago. He was making 550k this year. Not that much for an NFL player. Looks like he has 189 receiving yards this season. He actually plays a bit and had a pretty good game last week.

I thought about picking this dude up last week in my fantasy league but someone had already grabbed him. He's been pretty good for the bengals so far this year. He'd be a steal at 550k if he keeps up his current pace.
