I didn't forget

I didn't forget

After consulting with a more knowledgeable member than myself, I've decided to let these ladies go for longer than I planned. So, two things to mentions here.

1, for the first time ever, my buds have that special ripeness look that I've always seen on the internet, but never acquired myself. Now I know the not-so-secret secret lol.

2, botrytis. Damn it, damn it, damn it. I knew this day would eventually come, but man oh man there is nothing to prepare you for this kick in balls. Its more like taping firecrackers to your balls and lighting the wick.

The buds that were particularly huge and particularly dense were only affected. I had to remove 4 separate heads off 3 plants. I'm hoping that I got it all. I already lost what has to be over half an ounce of some of the best - if not THE best - bud I've ever grown. Its heartbreaking to see 4 fist sized buds in a ziploc baggie destined for a landfill, but biology doesn't care how badly I want to smoke something or not, so what can you do?

My two biggest buds were spared - I want to say that that's my sour chemicals pheno that's still in tact, but I admit I was slightly more emotional than normal, and I didn't take note of anything. Regardless, I specifically remember my biggest one is okay, so fingers crossed she has serious mold resistance.

I was debating chopping them tomorrow or chancing giving them time to finish, but I realized I'll be working nonstop until Sunday morning, so I'll just have to grit my teeth and hope for the best. The infections were all still white fuzz, excluding one case of pink fuzz. None of it was exposed but the pink one slightly. There was no black rot anywhere on anything, so hopefully I got it in time. I would basically have to lose a whole night's worth of sleep to harvest, and my job is too demanding to make such a decision unless absolutely necessary. What's the protocol for this? Do I need to bite the bullet and chop the whole forest? Man this is crazy...

Sorry to hear bout the botrytis. Whats the RH at in your flowering area? Maybe its time to pick up a dehuey.

Seeing as you've got the bot, I would advise going ahead and chopping everything now before you have more of it to deal with. Sort out the conditions that caused it, and come back for a round 2 in the near future.

Duly noted. My dehuey busted shortly after this run began. I thought I could get by without one as I didn't want to buy a new one for one single run, but looks like I paid the price for that bad idea. I'll take everything down tonight and inspect every single bud as I go. I love growing this this line already, I will do it justice as soon as I acquire a new location.

Sucks I lost some grade A bud, but I'm still stoked for this harvest! Lesson learned, in any case.

Yes it is a hard lesson to learn. When lights are out and plants are transpiring the humidity increases substantially. You had a good run though man and that bud will still be good smoke even though taken down a bit early. You might even like the high and terps better taken early it is all person preference at the end of the day. I did not like quite a few things taken past 60 days. c99 being one of them.

Its the difference between theory and practice, I suppose. I knew humidity spikes at lights out, and I knew botrytis likes temp and rh swings, but my brain hadn't put those two together until I realized my buds shouldn't be turning pink and fuzzy lol. My airflow could have been better, too, but live and learn.

I'm certainly becoming more interested in the effects caused by harvest time than I was before. For one, it seems early harvests help prevent botrytis lol.

Its funny you mention C99. That's the other strain I'm planning on running first in my next spot. It just makes sense to have my first selections done on relatively fast lines - one WLD and one NLD.

Luckily, no more fungus was found on my SHIT. It'll be a nice little stash for how ever long it lasts. Several monster nugs on my production table were infected, but most of it seems healthy.

I got my baby dehuey rigged to empty into a huge 33 gal tote set at 40%, so I'm hoping that will cease the spread of any fungus I undoubtedly missed. There's no living plants in there any more, so I'm sure the little fellow will be able to keep up whereas before it was piss in the ocean.

Turns out my humidity was over 70%. Not a proud moment, but its important for anyone reading this to know that it was my fault they molded up and not necessarily MNS.

It's a shame that you lost so much to botrytis (bud and sleep), but it sounds like you still got a fair amount of stash. Hopefully you also got a fair amount of rest.

In my experience, It's a good idea to keep a close eye on it once It's in jars. I had a battle with botrytis on my first outdoor run, and even after I got rid of whole colas that were infected, I still lost a jar or two to inattention and latent spores.

Thanks for putting on a great show. I look forward to the smoke report and dry/cured shots!

Yeah I should have mentioned that ^ make sure the shit is a little more dry than normal going into jars. Might want to grab some boveda type packs too.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't want to spread this plague through jars. I think my SHIT will be alright, but I'll definitely be jarring my monster buds from my production table in those little tiny jars by themselves since those are the main culprits, methinks.

I appreciate the sympathy plant wise and sleep wise. The legends they tell about botrytis fucking up everything is more accurate than I first thought. The topper is I've been smoke free for a week and can't smoke for yet another!!! Its like botrytis got together with those puritanical drug screenings to stick it to me! :fsu: That timing is really something lol. On the positive side, a local store was having a promotion for rockstar energy, so I should be good for surviving work tonight.

I've got my ritual popcorn buds drying out beside my bed here, so I'll have an extremely rare opportunity to try my new medicine out after my first (and hopefully last) tolerance break.

Thanks for coming along for the ride. I'll provide an in depth smoke report and some dried bud porn, and I can proudly finish my first grow journal! Now I just gotta figure out why my signature never posts...:dance013:

Gumby, DJ, and 40Amp have already given you good advice on avoiding mold once its in the jars, but Id like to add a lil something extra too. When I put my buds into containers, I use vented lids for the first 24-72 hours so that I can 'burp' the buds without needing to open the containers. I even cram the buds in there pretty good so I can get a bit extra compression of the buds, and Ive never had to deal with mold this way. When I mean vented, just poke 4-5 small holes in the container lid. RH still stays very stable in the low to mid 60's IME, while excessive moisture escapes through the holes. Give it a try with some of your buds, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Hey GG! I’m sorry I haven’t stopped by in a while I was away for a bit because of life getting busy.

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed watching your grow!
