New Mexico fucks it up again

God as much as i love New Mexico I really hate New Mexico. The decriminalization bill that goes into effect aint really decriminalization. Earlier this year the Democrats fucked the pooch as bad as anyone can and abandoned a rec cannabis bill that became more absurd as it got re-written over and over.

Beginning on Monday, July 1, the personal possession of small amounts of marijuana in New Mexico will no longer be classified as a criminal offense. In April, Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill decriminalizing the possession of personal use amounts of cannabis.
The new law reduces first-time penalties for the possession of up to one-half ounce of cannabis from a criminal misdemeanor — punishable by up to 15 days in jail — to a ‘penalty assessment,’ punishable by a $50 fine. Subsequent offenses, however, remain punishable by the possibility of jail time. (no room for corrupt police abuse here)
“This is a win for consumers and activists continuing to fight and reform the state’s marijuana laws,” says NORML State Policies Coordinator Carly Wolf. “The criminalization of patients and consumers is a failed public policy, and there is finally a more sensible alternative in place. New Mexicans, a disproportionate number of whom are black and brown, have faced arbitrary discrimination and stigmatization for far too long.”

New Mexico state motto
"Good enough"

in part it all has to do with the fact that the reps and state senators don't get paid so you end up with a bunch of wealthy people who are basically hobby legislators.add to that the briefness of the legislative sessions so they are trying to cram 6 months work into a month.

so you have a bunch of people trying to cram bills through committee as fast as they can so you end up with poorly crafted bills that don't get any real work done on them.

if you want to see something i recommend finding out who your state rep is and going and talking to them and educating them.

Worked for us here in NS 6 yrs ago wrt ecigs. We flipped the legislators during public addresses to the reading, and when they tried to streamline the 3 readings (Announced on a Fri (after 3pm), for Mon Tue of the following week, and Mon of the week after) the public told them to back the truck the f... up. The Premier got involved and stated the 3rd reading will not take place until they heard from the public and industry. That particular session was "short of spectacular" the health ministers and appointees walked out with their tails between their legs

Although the mtg was closed to the public (ecig vendors only, (they had heard the public)) every argument they brought up, we shot down, to include but not limited to the Health Minister denying that the Canadian Lung Association did not receive grants from BP. Eh! Checked again It is on there website (a requirement under Canadian Law). That was the 1st of many instances were he had a face palm
