Human settlement of Mars in 2023

Mars One will establish the first human settlement on Mars in 2023. A habitable settlement will be waiting for the settlers when they land. The settlement will support them while they live and work on Mars the rest of their lives. Every two years after 2023 an additional crew will arrive, such that there is a real living, growing community on Mars. Mars One has created a technical plan for this mission that is as simple as possible. For every component of the mission we have identified at least one potential supplier. Mars One invites you to join us in this next giant leap for mankind!

2023: One Way Ticket to Mars!!

The next giant leap in human space exploration could be establishing a human settlement on Mars. Barack Obama has pledged to put humans on Mars by 2033, but a new private space consortium (Mars One) led by Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdrop, promises to get four humans on the surface of Mars as early as 2023, for an estimated cost of six billion USD.

However probably the most startling thing about Lansdrop’s plans is that for the intrepid explorers who take part, there will be no turning back…Yes that’s right, this is a one way trip! The purpose of the mission is to establish a permanent human settlement on the red planet. The main reason for the one way trip is to slowly grow the colonies population. As every two years, the colony would welcome four new residents.

The entire project from the training phase to the mission itself, will be televised in what could be one of the biggest global media spectacles of all time! The Mars One group hope that the media coverage will in part pay for funding, and attract new investors, as well as inspiring the public to take a more active interest in space exploration.

The Mars One team claim that no new technologies will need to be developed. Apparently all the components needed already exist, and will be provided by a worldwide collection of private space firms. The mission launch vehicle will be Space X’s Falcon nine rocket, and a modified version of the Space X dragon capsule will be used as a lander. The landing site, and habitat will be built by a rover, which will be sent to Mars a few years earlier to prepare for the arrival of the first human colonists.

If you're interested in becoming one of the “lucky four” Mars One will be taking applications later this year. Out of these applications 40 people will be selected to take part in a televised 10 year training program in which the applicants/contestants will be narrowed down to the final four through a system of public votes.

I know this all sounds too good to be true, like its straight out the pages of some science fiction novel… But then, its like Einstein said, “If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.” So with that in mind, I’m going to remain sceptically optimistic on this one!

I had heard about similar plans a couple of years ago, but those plans didn't require the astronauts to stay there for the rest of their lives?
It sounds like a cost cutting measure, doesn't it?
For something so epic, i think having to stay there is a bit rough, especially to begin with.
Just my opinion?

I would not do it. I think one reason it is one way is because they have no way of blasting back off from mars back to earth. Look what it takes for us to just get to the space station mars is way to far. We will see if this even happens.

No, the reason it's one way is because coming back to earth is pointless, if your goal is to create a permanent colony. There have been plans drawn up by other entities which would involve sending a fuel processing station in advance which would use solar energy, chemicals in the regolith, atmosphere, etc to create fuel for the return trip.

^The reason it is one one is because there is no plausible way they will live. Any one that tries to live there is going to die. They have no real atmosphere, and will eventually just be killed by space debris. The first 4 or 5 groups are sure to die. It is not like Louis and Clark. They have no Saqajuia to show them the way. They have no Iroquois tribe to teach them to grow corn and catch fish so to speak. So many people die trying to climb Everest still after training for like a decade. Mars is going to fuck them up.

The reason this is such a stupid idea... The martian gravity will fuck their bones to hell.

Martian gravity is 38% of ours (the moons is 16.7%)

Astronauts/Cosmonauts have to bust ass on the ISS (and any extended space trip), exercising and trying keep their muscle mass. When there is no gravity, the body no longer needs to maintain its muscle/bone mass.

So no one would live on the Moon or Mars for an extended period, and ever expect to walk on Earth again without MONTHS/YEARS of 'rehab'.

(fwiw, I think its truly the last frontier for a handicapped person. Someone who already permanently lost their ability to walk would have far less reservations about never doing it again on Earth.)

so we are finding lots of good reasons to SAY why not; but I still really wish that they find the reasons to make them ASK why not? I wish them success. It would be the coolest thing ever.

maybe the reason aliens bodies are small is not because they are so smart and dont use them. Maybe it is because they are from a tiny tiny planet with way less gravity and even their Mr. Universe would be crushed to death if he ever stepped foot (or tentacle) on Earth. I think they could not build strong enough objects, (because things do not get that dense on there planet) so they do not have the capability to build a protection chamber. However they have huge brains to solve many of these problems; and extremely light materials and that can travel fast and transport efficiently through low gravity or no gravity empty space where they can have labs and collect raw space materials.

back in the day, when people came to the North American colonies, it was pretty much a one way trip
most ended their days on this side of the Atlantic
just got to motivate people, hmm, maybe founding the 1st right to grow whatever you want in your habitat would get some volunteers
might be able to grow some big ass plants in that 40%(or so) earth gravity

I've got a good one....
......There won't be any Ganja :yoinks: or internet porn :noway:
and if you think it takes a long time to get your bou/bay order from blighty to wherever you are now....well....../.

^They could make oxygen by growing space weed. that would be cool. I wonder what buds would look like at that gravity. Imagine how fast root growth would be in zero g

OK, so Mars is a smaller planet. Would that mean that Mitt Romney's a bigger asshole when he's there?

astroponics, sounds like a new buzzword!
but for a space based habitat, hemp/MJ would be a photosynthetic dynamo
the smoke would just be a bonus

I would like to believe it, a Mars mission about 10 years sooner than when NASA may do one, and more likely to be within my lifetime.
But it does seem too good to be true, private spaceflight has come a long way but still is just going to the space station and I doubt the funding is there. I did not watch a video as I am fearful of viruses. I hope it is for real!

I think it's highly doubtfull. The next logical step would be more self-sufficient space stations or a colony on the moon. Neither will be done in the foreseeable future.

in a billion or so years when the sun expands and the earth is to hot mars will be good to go for habitation.

Here's a better idea... take the 6 billion and invest in improving the surface of our own planet. We already have an atmosphere and gravity to boot.

This would be funny, if they had a reality TV game show format, like survivor, and started voting each other off the Island...
