The Kids Are Doing Well! Thanks Cannamunity All For Your Help!

Greetings my fellow Cannabis Lovers and New Friends,
I am extremely grateful to have become a member of this Community! I'm beginning to realize this forums potential. In Fact... It is actually all of YOU PEOPLE (yeah, I said it) within that really makes this website work so well! You all have made my overall growing experience thus far great. I've only posted a few times and the immediate feedback I'm getting is AWESOME! We all want our questions answered quickly and the members of this site do just that. Newbie to expert we all start somewhere. I truly appreciate all your help and I will pay it forward (here only) as I learn and grow (pun intended) a little more each day!

I know, I know.... You're probably looking at my pics and thinking....... This guy's got 5 little plants vegging out at about a month old and he's this excited... This guy doesn't know what he's in for. Oh but I do.... You see, I'm almost 40 years old and this is a project I'm doing with my father. Therefore, I can't lose! Of course I want to yield a lb. a plant just as much as the next guy but either way, I get to grow (and smoke) the most beautiful flowers in the world.... WITH MY DAD! YEAH! "WINNING!"

So here's the latest... 5 days after transplanting and they're doing amazing! - How do I know if I packed the soil too tight?

I'm just praying there are at least 2 females out of the 5!
I got the seeds from some Grape Stomper that I got from a friend. He had a Bubblicious Hermaphrodite that lightly pollinated some of his other plants, Grape Stomper being one of them. Therefore, I know the genetics but I've never seen the end result. At least not yet!

The first 7 or so of these pictures were from yesterday. The last few pictures will give you all an idea of how BAD they were doing right after me and my dad transplanted them (from solo cups to 3 gallon pots (too much??)). Thanks to some love, some luck and some great help from this amazing Cannamunity, I may end up with some flowers :woohoo:

Thank You All!!!

Under-watering due to fear of Over-watering

Under-watering due to fear of Over-watering

Hello All,
I'm hoping for some advice on watering. I've read so often that the most common newbie mistake over watering that I may be fearing over watering to a fault.

I've been keeping a very close eye on them and letting the soil get nice and dry between each watering. This time they're showing signs of needing to be watered. I'm sure they'll perk right back up by tomorrow (I watered them today) but, my question is this; is it bad to allow the plants to get a little dry too many times throughout the grow? Or, should I let them get to this point every time between watering. In other words, should I let the plants tell me when they NEED to be watered as a rule of thumb?
Thanks All!

I personally would water before they droop. I had the same problem as you, underwatering due to fear of overwater. Do this. You said you just watered. Now wait until they begin to droop again. How many days was is. 3? 4? Water again. Next time water again the day before they would have drooped. Water to run off and then don't water again until dry. I now use a soil moisture tester. Whenever it reads 2 when I insert it I water to runoff. Usually every 3 to 4 days

Container size is important. If they are In too large of a container it takes too long to dry between waterings. Start with solo cups and slowly work your way up for a giant root ball and happy plants.

I'm a Newbie myself but have learned a lot and plants look great now!

Thanks Backwoodsman! I have them in 3 gallon pots now and they dried up on the 3rd day after giving them 1 quart water/nute mix per plant. I'll go with every 2 days now. I also use a moister meter (simple green analog deal) and each plant read 2 - 3 consistently throughout different locations within each pot.

I went from Solo cups to 3 gallon pots. I may do a more gradual upgrade on my next run. (Maybe Solo to 1 gallon to 3 gallon to 5 gallon).

How do I know when they need to be moved to 5 gallon pots?

Basically when they need to be watered daily. You definitely made to large of a jump to soon. That's part of your issue. You should water to runoff when in proper sized container.

Solo > 1 gal > 3 gal > 5 gal next time. I made the exact same mistake. The problem with going to large too soon is you cant water to runoff without taking 5-7 days to dry risking root rot/oxygen deprivation issues.

Light watering in large containers only realistically wets the top few inches in soil instead of saturation the entire medium. If the plants are not forced to send roots down in search of water then they will not bother. Don't transplant for a good month at least.

The other problem with the light watering is concentrated nutrient uptake in small volume of water which can lead to toxicity. The larger the volume of water the less concentrated it is when they are drinking.
