What does the aspirin do?

Not sure of the action, but it’s known to keep cuttings fresher longer. If you’ve ever bought cut flowers and such, they usually have a little baggie that says “add this to the water in the vase”

What’s in the baggie is aspirin powder.

The active in aspirin is salicylic acid. Plants have a salicylic acid pathway, that when switched on acts as a defense pathway in the plant. By switching on this pathway you induce a stress response which results in higher essential oil production. That's the very simple version - for more info google salicylic acid and plants.
