Look back to Teddy Roosevelt's speech in (I think) 1912, entitled 'The New Nationalism.'
The battle between, or pendulum swinging between a world defined by us all, versus a world defined by Oligarchy and special (monied) influence, goes back well before Teddy's speech about this Country.
It's my strong and fairly informed opinion that in today's corporate-owned, corporate influenced world, we, the Commoners, are merely worker bees and commodities, not too unlike pork bellies. Anything we do, even in our own lives, by our own choice, that interferes with the multi-nationals and Oligarch's 'bottom line' in their profits, is deemed a threat, and typically treated legislatively as such.
