30 day small batch compost

B

Baked Alaskan

I'm starting this thread to show my technique but not my mix. There is enough info on the web about compost mixes, although feel free to ask questions or post your own mixes.

You will need:
18 gallon tote with lid
Seed heating mat with probe and thermostat
Couple old blankets or sleeping bags

Chop your mix fairly well and put in the tote. Set the tote on the heating mat and put the probe near the bottom of your mix. Cover the tote with the blankets to keep the heat in. I set my thermostat at max (108 f). Let it sit for 4 days then stir/mix it every 2 days. In 30 days or so it should be done.

I usually get 4-6 gallons of finished compost.

It only smells strong when you take the lid off, I do it in my utility room right now with no smell in the rest of the (small) house.

You need to use a thermostatic controller to shut the heat mat off or it will melt. My last mix hit 135 f the first day.

Good luck!

So it breaks down to about a third of what you started with?

Yes, it yields quite a bit less than what I put in. Its a bit different each time, as my mix is a bit different each time also.

Rob,
That sure is a beautiful spot in your sig. -granger
I am blessed to live in a place that is still relatively wild. Deer, elk, bear, cougar, wolves and steelhead and Chinook salmon.
