Flipflop to hide usage or double output

I just wondered why do people primarily use flipflops is it to disguise utilising a medium amount of power (a couple of kw) or is it to double output without increasing suspicion on the amount of juice being used?

Constant power usage.
No spike.

Some people played around with doubling space w/o doubling wattage used, but yeild may not be doubled. Lazyman did a grow with stagggered lighting.

If you have more then one flowering room it just makes sense, nothing like a perpetual setup knocking down a harvey every 4 weeks.

Agreed, works best for 2 flowering rooms and 1 veg. use the flip flop on the flowering and whatever you want for the veg 24/0 so you have a constant power stream (for those concerned with smart meters)

That is a total myth.

Have you actually put an amp probe on the circuit when it flips?
Had you done so you would see that is not the ballast that draws the current, but the lamp as the MH or sodium vaporizes. The flipflop does NOT hide the inrush current spike, but does save money on ballast equipment duplication.

Seems strange, if 1 room with 2kw=2 pounds then 2 rooms with 2kw (flipfloped) should yeild 4 pounds.

is their a link, may be an intresting read, i can't imagine having two difference spaces with flipflopped lights wouldnt yeild twice as much (assuming the temperatures are kept at optimum)

Ash,

He's referring to flipping the lights within the same room. Checkerboarding the lights using more lights, but not doubling the wattage being burnt. Lights come on as others turn off ..just moving the light around like a light mover would in hopes to cover more sq.ft without any additional wattage.

Flipping to an entirely 2nd flowering room would yes double your yield. Just a way to avoid buying double the amount of ballasts.

If you've got the space its a great way of running 2 flowering rooms.

I belive the need to flip flop ballast came from those off the grid using genny power. A generator is meant to run at a consistent 75% pf. So by flipping the generator runs 24 hrs a day at proper capacity.
