PHOENIX (AP) — "Three Phoenix police officers have resigned after a man alleged they forced him to eat marijuana found in his vehicle to avoid going to jail, Chief Joseph Yahner said Thursday.
A fourth officer, Jeff Farrior, was demoted from lieutenant to sergeant for being aware of last week's incident and not taking appropriate action, Yahner told reporters.
"Their actions are appalling and unacceptable. This conduct is against everything that we stand for," Yahner said.
Police identified the three officers who quit as Richard G. Pina, Jason E. McFadden and Michael J. Carnicle.
Two of them are being investigated both criminally and by the department, Yahner said, adding that the third officer is considered a witness to the act and is the subject of just the administrative investigation.
Yahner said all of the officers' video cameras were turned off and did not record the incident in which a 19-year-old Phoenix man was stopped for a traffic violation around 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 13. The man, whose name was not released by police, was issued a citation and had his car towed.
He later told a patrol supervisor that the officers demanded he eat the marijuana, estimated to be about a gram, or go to jail.
The man reported feeling ill after ingesting the marijuana of an unknown potency, but didn't need any medical attention, a police spokesman said.
Yahner called the allegations about the officers' actions "disturbing and upsetting."
The three officers who quit were all in their first year with Phoenix police and were probationary employees, according to Yahner.
"I was going to fire them. They chose to resign," he said.
Yahner declined to discuss details of the criminal and internal investigations."

I saw this too this morning. There’s something sketchy about this story or there not telling all of it. The guy was stopped for a traffic violation, received a citation, and his car was towed? They couldn’t bust him on a drug charge because they made him eat the evidence nor was it filmed.

I thought that, too....however, AZ has some weird ass laws. Towing might be routine.

More often than not, I've seen or read officers scarfing stash for themselves. One idiot kept his lapel camera on. Dumb!

One gram of bud that had not been decarbed? Wouldn't get you the slightest bit high. His upset stomach must have come from having to deal with the cops.

What a dipshit, you can't get sick from a gram of bud, and the only thing that made him sick was knowing that he just ate a gram that's not decarbed so he won't even get high from it.

He should have been happy they didn't bust him for it.

I was just about to say the same thing, but did not know the term decarbed. Know since the 1970's if it is not heated to about 180 for 10 or fifteen minutes, would do nothing. That is the reason they bake it into cookies or other things.

That is why we make cannabutter or lazy could just bake into cookies. I have made cookies from sugar trim, where after one, I zig zagged when I walked, and saw colors laying in bed. Not heated to correct temp for certain time will do nothing.

What state is going to make an arrest for 1 gram????? I have been given back over half an ounce, in the 1980's, several times.

Bingo! Another example of the biggest gang in the U.S. protecting their own. They will probably be at new police departments by Monday.

I'm not sure about AZ law, but if the guy had expired or missing license plates I can see it being towed since it's illegal to drive with either in every state I've lived in.

Yeah, if I recall there wasn’t much info on what the traffic violation was. Not pertaining to this but wasn’t it Arizona that if you tested positive for THC metabolites you could be charged with a DUI? Maybe other states too.
