run around in maine

During the application process for getting my state o maine ,DHHS approved, medical marijuana card i run into a snafu....[little back ground]...My primary care doctor agree's that mj might be heplfull with my chronic pain but doesnt want to be the first on the block to write the recommendation. He says he's is on board with the idea if i can find a "specialist" to script me out....I go threw some local resourses ,find a new doctor, explain my delema,he checks my records gives me a once over[im 50 and broken] and within the hour i have my hand written recomendation giving me permission to use medical mj under maine law......So now im going through the states registration process, filled out the paper work, send in the check and waiting for my state issued card..waiting and more waiting..My wife tries to track down what the problem is and finally gets through to the head of the mj program in maine ,sam...Sam says the state requires doctors use a standardized form for patients that want to enroll in the mmj program,my doc just wrote it out freehand on the offices letterhead and alls need be done is just have the doc refill out your info on this form and fax it back and your all set.......I wait more.....Long story short...IN the time sinse my "specialist"wrote me out my medical permission slip his office was absorbed into a medical group with a new political ideas on how to deal with the issue of mmj.Under the new corperate administration all doctors have been told not to fill out the required paper work that MAINE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES needs for patients to be in compliance of the law by jan 1st 2011...
tHis is happening all over maine at this time.....Many patients who have had legal protection for years are being left high[ or not] and dry cause doctors are scared into not signing the paper work needed by patients to stay legal under the new rule changes....Im sorry to polliute this medicinal site with a bunch of problems from maine but there seems no other pertenant place for the topic...
tO ME it seems if your looking to find a doctor who will to discuss the use of medical mj, start with one who owns an independant practice. Most of the larger hospital/medical groups have policys in place making it "uncomfortable" for doctors from wanting to sign on the dotted line......
Wish we still had the state sections to hash out these local/regional issues......pleasant evening to all....E.C/out

EC please don't be sorry..yours is a medical issue, very valid here. I feel for Ya Bro having to go through all that amd still put up with your medical problems, with no meds, every day. I really think the political change and attitudes are relaxing more and more everyday. I hope it reaches your state sometime soon. Until then we can listen and discuss...good luck getting that next app through. DD

wicked cool.
I had nothing but pleasant experience regarding Dr. Sulak. If you got an apt there and already qualified according your medical records, you'll be all set.

Will Dr. Sulak write a recommendation for depression? It is unclear to me whether this is a valid reason in Maine. :thank you:

You can check out who qualifies as a patient under maine law by going to,maine state dept of health/ human services[DHHS]....I dont believe depression is a listed condition....
If you call the DRs office im sure they could answer your questions also....
Good luck :tiphat:

And yes,if you want to be left alone to do your own thing northern maine is where to go.Something like 2 state police for the whole of the" up county"area...Feals like alaSka,only with black bears instead of polar bears and moskitoes big enough to carry off a small child..Truely the land of paul bunyion and babe the blue ox.The place where tall tales are born :blowbubbles:

I would like to post a link for anyone who has questions about Maine's medical program.

http://www.asamaine.org/

I have had a few questions regarding this January deadline and a call to them straightened everything out.

E.C., Are you a registered caregiver yet? Did you use any services to link up with patients or did you know everyone already?

Our business is small/word of mouth or by peronal referance...
If your a maine mj patient or just want to talk feel free to give me a shout :tiphat:.
Question to you....Is ASA telling thier clients to enroll in the dhhs program by the deadline or are they calling for a boycott to the new rules??

I speak with Charlie Often, he does alot to help people. I know he is upset with the hiv/aids privacy issues. I do not belive that he is agains people enrolling. I have heard that the state has gone into Dr.Sulak office. Seems he is writing many many recomandations. God bless him and his office, I wish thier were more willing Doctors. We get calls from people daily who are having problems finding doctors, this is the biggest problem in Maine right now.

Hey swordfish;
Sorry, didnt mean to imply that asa was asking for non compliance.I knew they wernt to happy with the apparent hippa code violations and was curious colletively which way the group was headed...Its been our experience that Dr's who are part of large medical groups that recieve federal funds are not not willing or able to fill out the required paper work the state wants for the DHHS I.D card....
My PCP told me i met qualifcations for medical mj but he wasnt going to be the first in our town to write out the script. He was ok with me finding a "specialist"....
Thats happening all over Maine ,no wonder thier all ending up to Dr S's....Him and a few others are the only ones will to stick thier necks out for the patients of Maine...All we can do is try to educate the system, one patient at a time...
tHE Second issue ,for the patient that decide to grow thier own medicine is where to get the infomation and materials needed to start...To us here on i/c that may seem easy but to a new patient who has never been involved in the MJ culture before, its a whole new world full of many who are poised to take thier money and run.:ying:...
Always a pleasure to chat with others from the neighborhood.
