recombinant inbred lines

Hey plant geeks, fellow breeding enthusiasts, what are your thoughts on Recombinant Inbred Lines (RIL)? It seems to me that exploiting the segregation of parental alleles in the F2 gen. would be an effective way to make many families from a relatively small popluation size. I guess what my question is, is how can it be done with dioceous plants without artificially selfing, to achieve "single seed descent". The concept is kinda new to me so I'm interested to see if anyone has experience or knowlege to share.
