In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, where she served until her 1993 appointment to the Supreme Court. Justice Ginsburg has become known for her scholarly, balanced opinions and forthright personal courage. A cancer survivor herself several times, she has assisted thousands by her example of frank discussion of the state of her health and early diagnosis.
By the time she sat on the Supreme Court, she had already wiped over 200 discriminatory laws off the books. As one of the nine justices, she wrote majority opinions in the most significant rulings of our time.
The notorious RBG wasn’t a feminist, at least not enough of one for some women’s groups to support her when President Bill Clinton nominated her to fill Byron White’s seat in 1998. She was considered far too conservative and an incrementalist, someone who’d let too many doors be slammed in her face without ever raising her voice or burning a bra.
