400W Joey Weed Mix & a bagseed - Bio Bucket style

This grow has been in the works for a while. I started the seeds for the mothers on Dec 21st. Since then I've cloned them for sex and cloned them again for the grow. First let me introduce you to the mothers. I germinated in paper towel, transferred to pearlite drip cups then to a DWC. JW3 grew faster and I kept it in a DWC, JW4 & JW5 were transplanted to soil along with a clone of a plant I call Big Bertha (It was from a very large seed I saved over a year ago).

Here is the Bertha mom (in soil under 250w) right before harvest.

I am keeping my eye on JW5, it's an unusual plant. From seed it grew slower but with close nodes and now seems to be growing faster sideways than up.

I had some problems with the clones the second time around, JW3 & JW4 barely made it.

Here is JW3 the day I put it in the bio bucket.

Here is JW5

Here is an overview on the day I flipped to 12/12 (Yep on 4/20)

Here is how they look today

I'm using GH Lucas style with Floralicous + and Awesome Blossoms and CalMag + as I'm using RO water. I am also considering foliar feeding Purple Maxx and Gravity.

I'll be doing weekly updates, feel free to pull up a chair.

Day 10 of flower

Here's a mid week update. I added a 250W HPS, now the 400w is closer to the smaller plants and illuminating the side of Big B and the 250W is filling in the the back & top of Big B. JW4 is now almost as tall as Big B and JW3 is not far behind.

looking good, I have never experienced joey's strains but I hear very good things about them

Hi Dream,
Your plants look nice and healthy! I just ordered some JW Apollo 11 F2's and will be scroging in a cabinet soon, hopefully. Your setup looks like my first DWC rig - bubblers connected at the bottom to a control bucket and later converted to a full-blown bio bucket setup. Do you plan to change to bio buckets with a top drain and higher turnover?
Not that you need to--I see some awful nice bud shots in your gallery, done I presume, with a recirculating bubbler.

Hi Pete
Good luck with your Apollo 11's, I'm hoping to find one in my mix. All the Joey weed strains look good. AK47, C99, Blueberry, Northern Lights, White Widow. I'm hoping to sample all of them eventually. I probably won't be converting to a top drain. I have no problems with this setup and if you've seen my last grow I wouldn't want them any bigger anyway. With this setup I can reposition the buckets, and the reservoir is on wheels so I can swing it out from under the shelf. I couldn't do either of those with a big drain pipe down the middle.

The Big Bertha bag seed. JW3 is the branch on the left.

From above. I counted 19 tops. The 2 main colas are the top right and the lower left ones.

And the close ups. The trichs are just starting to show themselves.

JW4, the stretchy one is now taller than Big B. Her mom is stretchy too.

JW5, still growing like a carpet. The uppermost bud is it's main cola.
It's about 1/3 as tall as JW4.

The stretch is slowing and the buds are filling out.

Big Bertha bag seed...

JW4, AK47 maybe?

JW5 this one's only 12"-18" tall

Nice pics B. JW4 doesn't look like AK-47 to me. Not that it isn't the shit. :rasta:

Thanks for the input guys. I would like more input from anyone on which strains these might be. It would be interesting to discuss which traits are the best ones to use to identify a strain. I can dismiss the tree/bush growth style as JW3's moms are bushes. I think that if a young plant gets a lot of light it encourages bushy growth mode, lower light levels when they are young (young clones or seedlings) puts them in stretch/tree mode. This is a theory I have as a result of noticing that all of the plants that I have vegged under a CFL in a dome fixture have been bushy as was JW3's mom. It seems like some kind of survival mechanism. I keep the cfl about an inch from the top and the dome redirects all the light into the plant.

Here is a look at the 3 Joey Weed moms and their unique traits

This is JW5's mom and a pic of JW5. A short slow growing plant with the widest leaves of the three. Some of the leaves have a dark blue tint to them. JW5 is developing very dense and small trichomes. The week before flower the dome lamp slipped and the cfl scorched a couple leaves. Maybe that accounts for it's sideways growth.

Here is JW4's mom and JW4. I'm keeping the moms under 50w of CFL and low nutes so they grow slowly but this mom is twice the height of the others. She has the thinnest leaves of the three. So this has the most sativa like traits. JW4 has a completely different color. It has a light yellow hue. Also the calyx's closest to the light are yellow, I thought they were hermies at first. None of my other plants have ever done that. It has trichomes that extend out 4" on a 5" leaf. This may be environment but the leaves seem to extend up at a tighter angle.

These are of JW3's mom today and her grandma so to speak. Grandma was from seed. This strain seems more or less average. No distinguishing traits so far. It is developing more trichomes than the bag seed but less than JW5.

An update on the grow. I moved the 150w HPS over JW5, it's so short it was 3' from the 400W. The plant with the tape brace is JW3.

And the latest overall shot. It's getting better every day!

The Big Bertha bag seed

JW3 is getting frosty and is showing the first red hairs

JW4, her sativa is showing

JW5 the leaves are yellow where the trichs are the densest, genetics or nutes?

I appears the yellow is from a couple of factors, first my PH keeps going low. It's been running around 5.5 with a few drops below that and causing a problem with the bag seed also. Second a combination of the dense trichomes and the camera flash make it look yellow even though under a magnifying glass there is much less yellow than in the pictures.

JW4 is getting fat, it may end up yielding as much as Big Bertha

JW3 quality but not quantity

The latest overall shot...

I think the yellowing is due to the PH dropping to 4.8 while I went away for the holiday weekend. I've brought it back up to 5.8 with aged tap water and PH+. Heat may also be playing a role, it's been peaking at 85.

Day 46

Thanks for the post Big Toke. I'm honored. I realize my drain system is more like a recirculating DWC. I already had the drains in the buckets when I discovered your stickies and I decided to experiment and base my system on your systems principles. Next time I'm going to have a valve so I can select tap or RO to top off the res with. I've noticed that RO tends to push the PH lower and tap raises it. Perhaps that will give me a better way to control PH.

Here is JW3 without flash. Gotta love those leaves smothered in trichomes.

And JW4

I'll start flushing this weekend.

just a guess but i'd think the jw3 is a blueberry or a blueberry cross due to the yield... i've had blueberrys look that way myself although they weren't joey's(nirvana's blue mystic)... i never did get to finish my mix pack as i had to relocate

Day 50

Day 50

I had a bit of a problem this week. My PH dropped to 4.7 when I went out of town for two days. All the Joey Weeds are unaffected, but Big Bertha was shocked. It showed itself first with yellowing leaves then slow growth. It seems to be recovering, I have new buds at the tips, but the hairs are mostly red on the rest of the bud. What do you think, should I harvest now, flush for a few days, a week? Here is the overall shot, I harvested 2 buds from Bertha to get an early taste.

Here is whats happening to Bertha...

This is JW3 from the top down..

JW4 and a side bud

and JW5 from the top and side..

Day 56

I've been flushing now for a week. Bertha has been developing naners so I harvested her. Yield looks halfway decent and I got a few grams of tasty bubble hash from her. I smoked some of the bud I harvested a week ago, Taste is very similar to her mom in soil, better I think. Sticky buds that make your fingers stick together.
Here is the grow now. That side bud of JW4 got so heavy it fell into JW5.

Bertha was holding up JW3 so now I have to tie her to the ceiling

JW4 from a new angle

A nice shot of JW5
