Epic Fail w/Mulch might kill my plant

Well, I was overzealous and rekt my best plant.

It has been hot and I decided to try mulching with hay.

I used Alfalfa straw/hay as mulch and it was piled on too thick. It turned "sour."

For a few days, my plant was stellar, but this morn it looks like it hasnt had water for days. Completely wilted.

The hay had started to compost. I removed most of it, it was steaming.

Rookie mistake. I composted my plant.

Heres a pic when she was healthy.

You made it too thick, anyway rather mulch with aged wood chips and dry oak leaves, far less volatile!
