Cut a slice of a wine cork off, make a hole.

Peace!

Duckweed I was trying to grow for my Koi, but not sure if they are eating it yet. Testing an idea to use it as cover in my DFT tray, to prevent algae by blocking the light.

My DFT tray? Why not have the whole tray filled with water like a giant pvc? Trying to save money by running less pumps for air stones and having it be more about the constant flow like DFT. Shoot DFT uses more electricity than ebb and flow, just realized that. Yikes!

Yes a test grow of my BlueDutchTreatHeadbandCookies thing.

Aquaponics. I’ve vegged cannabis this way only, starting some quickie seed to bloom to see how flowering goes with the fish, Koi and Crayfish.

Regarding using the cork in DFT, here’s the picture of that in my pvc system. Works better to cut them like pack man shaped for reuse I suppose.

Neat.

You can also use a foam egg carton lid for this. Push indents into the foam, poke a tiny hole in the middle of each indent, and float on water. The seed sits in a tiny puddle of water. Once the sprout shows, simply turn the seed and point the tail through the hole. Once fully rooted you can tear the foam apart to release the plants.

Or you can sprout in perlite or seedling mix, then simply rinse the roots before transplant. This is what I've done for years now. :)

That duckweeds a bit of a miracle plant too. Ive got a series of damn groing it out as fodder for my cattle- a whole lot of quality fatty acids. You might be interested in Azolla too.

I found a runaway sprout that had washed through the pebbles and over the small bowl I had on top of my filter ,under the intake for my growbed. A failed experiment for germination cause seeds washed through the hydroton. Some also got mushy/moldy looking.

Accidentally invented another technique for germination. I’ll put some uncracked seeds there to see how that goes.

The cork method only kind of works. The bubbles are to much and the sprouts constantly get wet on the tops to, some turned mushy.

Could also be cause I’ve been using RO water recently. Read on here that sucks for organic, just switched back to treated water for my Aquaponics system. Didn’t remember the sprouts getting brittle like how these seem to be, back then. I did a similar start with the sprout in a sponge plug.

Like starting them in containers with hydroton, if the sprout is taller this first transplant is easier.

Maybe that new setup is going to work this out for me, like that beautiful long sprout I found.

Plus the cork thing took forever for them to start making roots, I only noticed some today.

I realized the containers I’ve been growing my veg starts in were designed for soil and only have holes at the bottom. I was thinking this could be slowing the growth by restricting oxygen to the roots.

This is a picture of a small plant I transplanted into my new modified container with more holes.

I gotta keep better track this one is 2 weeks almost or just 1? I feel slower growing than other hydro, but healthy looking roots. Think its cause I’m not a DFT master more than cause Aquaponics is slower than other hydro feeding methods.

Depending on the koi population i guess there may or may not be enough nutrients in the mix. Ive only ever grown vegies in clay pellets aquaponic system so this is fascinating to me. What volume of tank and fish are you using? And how much duckweed is there- i hear it hungry.

It’s easy to wedge the sprouts in between some pebbles here if they are an inch or so.

Did that with these a couple days ago. Now some are tall enough to make transplanting into its own container easier.

BTW, these sprouts are:

(GSus OG x Blue Dream)f x
(GSC x BlueDreamBlueDutchTreatHeadband)m F2

Here are two of the gals from the same seed. A friend grew outside. Short but huge fat colas. Tastes like raspberries, kinds like red wine. A lot of body buzz but functional. G13 doesn’t taste like much in my limited experience. Just testing an early take of a lower branch.

Hope I find a God Bud lookin one, or a Triangle Kush kinda one if it’s in there. 6 of my micro quickie seed to bloom of these are two weeks in now. I want to perpetual 4 females each week hopefully, take some to another spot and put the pollen sometimes.

Cool, Purple Skunk looking one on the left?

The 4 biggest from first round of my perpetual, 2 weeks in. Those had 12 days of veg maybe. The next few rounds will be more sprouts in that haven’t any roots yet.

Quickie Seed To Bloom is better with a couple weeks veg? 1?

I believe a perpetual style like this should be good for avoiding to old of plants that have enough time for guck to muck up the roots. Maybe the plants just need a good rinsing out sometimes, the whole tray cleaned once a month kinda thing.

This pvc system was designed for lettuce. But if the plants are small like mine, think it should work.
I’m new at this DFT thing.

The old growth shows a lot of deficiency. The new growth looking better.

Thanks again for this forum, that I learned how RO water sucks for organic hydro, and as well for Aquaponics. Saved my new garden so far!

In a week hopefully I’ll see their sex. Probably won’t get such purples as my lights are off during the day.

Regarding those cork pack man looking things, I took the sprouts on 12/12 being held by such and transplanted into the baskets with pebbles. The corks were strangling some of them!

That under the wet filter mat seed cracking thing is starting to work. I’ll check back in a few days if they grow long enough for transplanting.

My Koi are in 2 100 gallon tanks. 45 gallon sump, 25 gallon growbed. Butterfly Koi are more resistant to disease. Koi hybrids. I may have to sell the fish in a couple years or build a larger tank. If their growth is stunted by to small a tank their organs keep growing which kills them.

Starting the 12/12 over again in a couple weeks cause there was a big power outage that lasted a few days. I put the plants outside. They are still alive but seem shocked. The whole system is recovering.

Made a mistake about the new strain I made.

It’s not a gSus OG cod’s but a Jesus OG.

Some of my plants have been getting some purple from the Blackberry or Purple Haze in Jesus OG.

Sick!!!! Really like the blackberry flavored one I got. Also like the one that stones like Romulan.

Basically, Deadhead weed X Surfer weed X Hells Angels weed!

The duckweed nearly covered the growbed, 2’ X 4’ a few days ago. Did a major water change. It will grow back quick, two weeks maybe?
