I've been trying to familiarize myself with some pre-hippie pot history lately & I came across a ton for fantastic material. It started a long time ago when I was still a youth listening to Louis Armstrong (this was the 1980s) and I caught a few suspicious references here and there "burnt black-eye peas" (smells exactly like a joint rolled out of trim), but didn't pay too much heed to it. Later on I remember hearing Tommy Chong say he learned about smoking herb from old jazz musicians and then later I came across some fine old music, but I still never really dug into the subject too much until I went back to it recently.
This document gives a better picture of the story than I could: http://www.ukcia.org/potculture/30/louis.html
In it Louis Armstrong talks about how learned of reefer from the old musicians who were around when he was young, folks who had been smoking since the late 1800s. I was reading that and listening to tunes like this:

…and I really enjoyed the hell out of it. Dig though it yourself if you have any free time, there is a small mountain of hot weed jazz, funny old slang (apparently she was Mary Warner before she was Mary Jane) surprising historical information.

One of the things I read about was that "vipers" called themselves so because of the hiss of a quick, sneaky toke on that joint you're trying to hide. Some of the old weed myths are pretty amusing too.
