How do you keep sides of fabric pots wet?

Maybe using more coconut coir on the edges when filling fabric pots would help hold moisture along the outside?

I know using more soil than perlite helps to retain moisture longer but the soil is more dense, so the plants will grow a bit slower than they would have with more perlite in the mix.
