@fiddy.

Good to see the update - nice pics. Don't we all wish we knew how to separate out the males early on. You'd be a billionaire if you can develop a test that shows sex while just sprouted. What an amazing feat that would be. Anyway, speaking about early sex identification - paging @Chimera. Don't know if you've popped into this thread, but I'm wondering if anybody is working on a test like that. You'd, of anybody, would have heard. Enquiring minds want to know.

Anyway, I've seen what them snapping turtles can do when i was a youngin. My pappy caught one on one of his fishing trips for trout to the one of the local creeks. Thing was on the small size but he showed me how powerful those jaws were. He put a large tree branch in front of the things mouth and that sucker just snapped it in half like it was nothing. Can't remember if that one ended up in our soup pot or not - pappy had a way with cooking what-ever he caught or hunted to keep the cost of food down for us. I also had a rather large turtle one destroy, and I mean destroy, a beautiful stringer of fish that I had caught. Was at a bass pond that we shouldn't have been on (private and stocked and probably the best fishing I've ever had on fresh-water) and we had no authorization to be on that pond - sneaked in under the fence. I had a stringer, and I mean a fat ass stringer of bass. Probably had 8 fish over 7lbs and another 7 over 5lbs. We were killing them - and we caught all of them from the bank as we couldn't sneak the canoe onto the pond. Anyway, we tied a stringer to one of the logs near the pond and came back to put more bass on the stringer and the turtle had eaten just about every fish we had on the stringer. Sum-bitch that pissed me off.

Just like stress on vines can be very good for wine, I think the same with pot - just not too much. You can really beat up a vine (look at some old growth vines and tell me they haven't had the shit kicked out of them by mother nature) and have some of the best, and I mean very best, wines in the world. Yeah, the grapes need their sun and you gotta watch late harvest rains, but everything else - yeah.

@poprock - problem with getting holes dug early down here is that something will end up growing in it on ya rather quickly. Completely agree with you on terroir - just like a fine wine, the nuances can be extraordinary if done right with an outside grow.

And to all - a happy wife means a happy life. Never, ever, ever, under any circumstances, piss off the old lady. She knows way too much about everything we do. And honestly, after 25+years with the same woman, do we really, really want to "do it all over again". Hell no for me. I'll put up with her issues just like she puts up with my issues. She's an unbelievable mommy to the kids and honestly that's what I value the most of everything.

And for our final superbowl game - Ima going to Vegas. Will be my 20th superbowl at Vegas. There is nothing like it. Hanging out at the sportsbook in Caesars palace is crazy. Every play, no matter who makes it, gets cheered for by half of the crowd. The other real cool ass part is making all the crazy bets - everything from how long the national anthem will be to what the next play is going to be - not just the line on the game itself. There's like 500 props bets that i'll make. Every one of them for $1.00. At the end of the day I'm normally win like 200 of the bets and lose 300 of them, but damn, its fun. I'll spend $100 for the entertainment. Back in 2009 when Pittsburgh beat Arizona 27-23, I had guessed the exact score of the game - that paid off $850 for a $1 bet. I made money that year (though that's been the only year I made money on the props bets). I had Denver winning straight up last year too, so I made money on the game but got clobbered on the props bets last year so it was more of a breakeven than anything else.

Food's expensive but drinks will be for free since i'll be sitting at a video poker machine right outside of the sportsbook.

Good morning Sunny.
I'll have to check out that Chimera thread you reference. I've stumbled across other threads that discuss early sexing of plants and have read some interesting things. Some say that node spacing can give them an early indication of sex. A lot of old timers who have watched thousands of plants say they have a good idea and can predict with fairly good accuracy. I'll just keep watching and looking for any differences that can be n early clue.

Yes those snappers are really something aren't they. They love the muddy little ponds. Probably so they blend in more with the environment. I've never seen one in a bigger sandy bottom lake but always the small ponds. They do make good soup. I don't know anything about making a turtle soup but I remember having a good one once. I'm glad they didn't tell me until after I ate it because I'm kind of a baby about eating things that are a little out of the ordinary like that. Your fishing story reminds me of fishing at a private pond when I was a kid. It was close to home so we went there a lot. If anyone say us we would get chased out but once in a while we would get to fish for a couple hours without interruption. That is also the pond where I saw the biggest snapper I've ever seen. Had to be over 30 pounds.

That's interesting about the grape vines. We have lots of apple trees here and the ones on the little antique heirloom orchards are beat to shit as well. I wonder if beat up trees make better apples too. I guess I'm beginning to see a pattern. Stress in fruit bearing plants increasing flavor and I look at cannabis as more of a fruit than a flower I think.

You are wise to treat your wife with respect and it sounds like you have a good one. I also Try not to piss off the woman in my life. Like you said we have to deal with each other's issues and make the best of it. I know too many friends who are always arguing with their wives and I always wonder how they have the energy for it. Disagreements happen but if we act like adults and have some respect they can always be resolved.

That sounds like a great time in Vegas. Have fun! I've been to Reno a few times but never to Vegas. My bro keeps trying to get me to go and he always has a great time there. Some day I'll check it out. All those prop bets have to be entertaining. Crazy that Nevada is (or soon will be not sure when the law goes into effect) a rec state. When we use to drive up to Tahoe and go to Reno friends would always warn us not to get caught with weed in Nevada. Super strict penalties. Now there will be weed shops in casinos.

Have a great time this weekend. I hope you win some good ones...Fiddy.

Thanks Rodehazrd.
I've heard go easy on the crystals. Apparently they work really well and if you use too many your soil literally never dries or something like that. You may be on to something good for grows where you can't be there to water. That's a great idea. Might be good around here too. We can go a couple weeks without rain in July and August and that might be just the little bit extra they need.

yeah brother
the local grocery has tri tip on sale this week for $2.99, so we are going to grind that up with bacon
the tri tip is trimmed so im thinking about 75/25?
the kids are also crazy for the fresh home made pizza, so im going roll out about four crusts and we will set up a build your own pizza bar
fresh basil and garlic in oil, wiht olives, onions, the works
/mrs chicky likes pineapple :p yuk!

so i gave my mom some of the fresh pasta and she was wild for it
now she wants a bunch to share with her friends
i told her the chickens are only producing about a half dozen eggs a week right now but in the spring i will be up to my ears
ill make tons then

scouting out a new grow spot is fun
walk through the woods and look for spots that have potential
after a while you will naturally see places that ofer promise
dont be afraid to take the road less traveled and remember, the harder it is to get to the more likely you are to reap a harvest
go where no one else would dare
also consider the local traffic when the weather turns nice
is this someplace a hiker might walk?
how about kids looking for a spot to hide out?
the more you know about the area the better

ive seen snapping turtles on the net and those things look awsome!
just like a modern dinosaur, all sharp beak and bad attitude!
but they pretty much stick to the bottom so as long as you dont tough the river bed you should be fine

pop_rocks

In my empire of dirt
sunny brings up another point, mulch

mulch
use it!
find local leaves and other stuff on the ground and cover any bare dirt
they say nature abhors a vacume and fresh soil is just calling out to weeds and anything else that grows in the wild
i would pile dead leaves and twigs around the base of my plants
not only does this discourage unwanted growth but it also helps preserve moisture
after you hump a few gallons of water many miles into the aroyo, you will understand how precious water really is

rhodehazard:
yes, i used polimer crystals that would swell up and retain moisture
back then i would tear open baby diapers and mix it into the dirt
now they have crystals you can buy pretty reasonably
but yeah, anything that will hold water in place is worth its weight in gold ( or in our case fresh buds!)

Oh man snappers. My friends would noodle for them in the river. One guy pulled a big one up stumbled a little and lost a fist sized piece of his upper leg. I stayed with a trot line for cats. Maybe I was scared but I never ate a turtle I liked. Now some catfish and hush puppies that's me.
Yeah mulch for me too especially if you use a ffhf or other amendment with perlite that stuff is coming to the top in the rain.

Ever go Noodlin for catfish? I've taken down some big sharks while deep sea fishing, but man, you'll never, ever see me shoving my hand in a muddy creek log lookin for a big ole cat. Nope. No way, no how, not ever.

And good morning all. Bluebird day here. Gonna be 75 and no humidity at all. Paradise by the dash board light.

Planting my tomato cuttings day is the big event of the day, and packin the suitcase for friday.

Anybody know with pot legal now in Nevada about getting any? I've heard CL is the way to go but I have no idea if thats a good idea or not. Technically you can't purchase any ... yet, but you can pay a "delivery" fee for "free weed".

trtc owns dispensaries and they opened two new places in Clark county. I think it's called blum. I read they honor any med card from any state.
Friend calls from Washington D.C.early morning he's up there for leukemia treatments. He arrived at the hospital to find security checkpoint To enter campus,he's got an ounce of flowers in a jar In Cooler a box of joints in his bag and a bottle of bourbon. He of course is ready to launch a loaf. They search, look at it all and refuse him entry
No alcohol allowed on campus he called me as he returned to leave the bottle in his room. The times they are a changing .

that shit is just crazy man!
catfish dont have teeth and the inside of their mouth feels like sandpaper
what does have teeth is the the other shit you will find under logs or in that muddy water
turtles, water snakes, gators

ive heard they honor out of state cards too, but i dont think fla has a medicinal program

Yeah you got it you dig down in the mud they can see a ring of sorts where the snapper is. Then they know from the feel of the shell which end they have hopefully it's the tail.

Good evening pop_rocks.
Tri tip and bacon burgers sound great. I think 75/25-80/20 is perfect for burgers and sausage needs a little more fat than that. Those should be killer. I've never ground bacon into meat for burgers but I've ground smoked brisket in and it's great. Pizza bar is a great idea. Fun for all and everyone gets exactly what they want on their pizza. Sometimes if I'm too lazy to make dough I'll just use a extra large tortilla for the crust, extra thin and crispy style. Sounds like your pasta is a hit. You must have skills to get that dialed in so quick. I bet having ultra fresh eggs is nice for fresh pasta. I've been taking it easy and haven't been cooking much the last couple weeks but I'll be back in the kitchen this weekend. Undecided on the menu yet but gotta do up something good for the game. Strange thing I use to see Tri tip everywhere in Oakland but almost never see it around here. It's a nice flavorful cut and I miss it.

I might have to postpone my scouting mission we got a couple inches of snow and all is white here for the first time since Xmas. I want to be able to see what is growing in the spots and the snow has covered all that. That's a good idea to consider that kids will be out there looking for hiding spots. The hikers and dog walkers mostly stick to the trails but kids are a different story. I'm thinking I need to go a little further off the path than I was originally planning on. Some of these parks have houses close to them and that means possible kids. Going to spend some time rethinking my plan and choosing some more remote spots.

Mulch shouldn't be a problem around here. Anywhere there's trees there will be lots of leaves that fell off last fall. Mulch for cover and moisture retention for sure. Plenty of sticks and stuff too.

It sounds like you have a great menu for the game Sunday. I have to start thinking about my menu. I want to keep it simple or at least keep it so most of the work is done early so I can chill and enjoy some drinks.

The wookiees are taking off a little and getting a couple more sets of leaves. I'll get some pics soon. They may need water tonight in fact.

dude, ive seen pictures of those things in large bodies of water and they get enormous!
like med size shark big, easily in the 6-8 ft range

we used to catch them when i was living in VA, and the ones we would get had spines behind their heads
something about them hurt worse than they should have and i wonder if they had some type of venom or bacteria present that would get in the wound
plus the head would keep breathing for hours after you severed them form the body

not really a fan of the fish but my mom and mrs chicky will tear into those suckers

That sounds like a good plan. I'd love to have a helper for prep work. Go easy on the beer before grinding or you might end up with finger burgers:). Pizza on bread rocks too. I'm jealous of your bread maker and might have to look into one of those since I can't seem to find time to make bread these days.
