New REC grow- what would YOU choose

Hey Canna Family!!

I’ve recently been blessed with a job opportunity. The job of my dreams, consulting for a Recreational Cannabis Startup in Oregon.

My first assignment was to go shopping and order every strain that I thought we would need in the future. I went through Attitude Seeds and Cannabis Family seeds, and both seed banks gave me a great deal
And hooked it up with some awesome freebies for my personal grow.

Now I have been given my next assignment. I need to choose 4 or 5 strains for our first few rounds. I need 1 indica, 1 Sativa, 1 hybrid, and 1 or 2 connoisseur flavors that are sure to preform well.

I need to choose good performing strains that will be able to produce up to 1LB per plant.

I will include a list of all the strains at the bottom of this post.

I really appreciate the advice

‘Decimated’ by oversupply, Oregon’s wholesale marijuana prices drop to $50 a pound

Oregon’s marijuana cultivators are facing a challenging environment that favors vertically integrated companies and craft cannabis.

Wholesale prices for outdoor-grown marijuana have dropped to as low as $50 a pound, and the situation isn’t likely to improve any time soon.

With hundreds of producer and retail licenses pending approval from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, which regulates the state’s cannabis industry, the supply glut is expected to only increase, depressing prices further.

As of Jan. 26, there were 520 retailers in the state, with 141 licenses pending approval, according to the agency’s website.

Compare that to 906 licensed producers, with 858 pending approval.

Retailers apparently are joining growers in a race to the bottom in cannabis pricing.

At $49 an ounce, Oregon’s retail prices are nearing the low mark of $40 experienced by neighboring Washington state.

To ride out even more contraction in the market, businesses – either nascent or long-standing – should be well-capitalized, industry insiders say.

“People would stop trying to get in the industry if they actually knew what was going on here,” said Aviv Hadar, co-owner of Oregrown, a vertically integrated cannabis company in Bend.

“If you think there’s money in growing cannabis, put on a seatbelt and sit back for a 5-10-year ride, because it is not easy.”

Oversupply issues

Cultivators selling outdoor-grown cannabis to processors are getting as little as $50 a pound, according to Hadar.

“(The market) is just decimated. Decimated,” he said. “There’s so much oversupply.”

“I believe it,” said William Simpson, founder and president of Chalice Farms, a vertically integrated marijuana company in Portland.

He said he’s seen wholesale marijuana selling for as low as $100 a pound, but $50 a pound is “absolutely” possible.

Donald Morse, executive director of the Oregon Cannabis Business Council, said he’s heard of some people paying only $50 a pound for outdoor-grown cannabis trim, but it’s more common to see $100-$150 a pound.

“Prices have come down dramatically,” he noted.

Pete Gendron, president of the Oregon Sungrown Growers Guild, said characterizing the situation as dire for growers “is not an overstatement.”

In the past two years, prices have undergone about a 50% annualized drop, according to Gendron, and he expects prices to drop even more next year as the market continues to contract.

Hadar thinks the industry will look a lot different in a couple of years.

“Half of these people are going to be out of business,” he said.

Most of Oregon’s outdoor growers are selling their product to be made into cannabis oil, often contracting out their harvest to manufacturers for two to three years, according to Hadar.

Contracting with a processor ensures a return on their crop and eliminates the risk of shopping it around.

Hadar said there aren’t enough retail outlets to buy outdoor-grown flower.

But, he added, there is a use for outdoor-grown cannabis in the form of vape cartridges, which are driving the Oregon market.

The cannabis oil in vape cartridges also is used for other infused products, including edibles and tinctures. Hadar argues that consumers favor discrete consumption methods.

For consumers who aren’t concerned with discretion, the flower that sits in jars on retail shelves is from indoor grows, and the best of that indoor-grown flower commands a premium.

Oregon is seeing more boutique cannabis farms that don’t harvest a lot of product. These operations are slowly expanding as they pump out high-quality cannabis.

“Quality control really is the name of the game right now,” Gendron said.

“If you still have top-shelf flower, you’re still getting paid a pretty decent price for it.”

Vertical integration

The only way for growers to make it in the current Oregon market is to be vertically integrated, Simpson said.

“There’s so much competition,” he added.

The Oregon Cannabis Business Council’s Morse agreed.

Without a retail license, he said, a grower is competing with all other producers and often getting the lowest price.

“They have to be vertically integrated,” he added.

According to Hadar, retail stores are a necessity in your operation if you want to be successful.

While a customer can buy an ounce of flower for as low as $49 at some retail shops, a similar amount sells for a high of $560 in Hadar’s store. It costs him about $50 to grow a pound.

“That business model works,” he said. “Unless you own your own stores, good luck to you.”

Gendron doesn’t necessarily agree that growers must be vertically integrated to survive.

For example, he said, retail chains are developing in Oregon, and a business with 10 stores is going to need a diversified product pipeline to maintain its supply.

He added that businesses that are better capitalized will weather the fluctuation.

Gendron, who also does some consulting, said he recently was approached by someone with a business plan that allotted $500,000-$1 million to get in the game.

If you’re running an efficient business, Gendron said, that’s enough to get started.

“If you have a business plan that’s designed around lower margins or if you’re internally capitalized, you’re probably going to do fine,” he added.

What to do?

Morse attributes Oregon’s oversupply to a black market that’s more active than ever.

That’s because growers who can’t find a buyer in the legal sector end up selling to the black market, contributing to the supply being produced by illicit growers.

“They’re undercutting the prices in a dispensary,” he said. “We lose a lot of our domestic market share to black-market activity.”

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission could intervene if it deemed such action were necessary.

According to Morse, the agency has the right to evaluate the harvest, compare it to demand, then limit or expand canopy sizes for all grows.

But that’s not the most attractive solution.

“I’m not one for market protection,” Morse added. “I believe in free enterprise.”

Simpson expects the industry to overcome this oversupply situation and get to the other side.

“We will gain more of an equilibrium as an industry and become more of a mature market,” he said.

“It will level out to a market that will sustain.”

tl;dr

way too many varieties, easy to get confused.

I'd pick a couple of varieties by Ace, a couple by Chimera and a couple by Bodhi.
You won't need anything else for a long time.

@Chunkypigs I have no problem choosing 5 strains on my own, however i do enjoy input from likeminded people. Hate me cuz you ain’t me?? I see the net still has no shortage of trolls

@Koondense sounds like a good idea. I have always been a fan of Bodhi’s gear. I don’t have anything against ACE seeds and i wouldn’t mind working with their gear, i honestly got stoned and forget them when i was making the order. It was one of the biggest orders Attitude seeds ever had and it kept resetting the website...

Wouldn’t it have been easier to drop that cash on some proven clones? If you want stuff like yield/ product consistency then clones would be the way to go... isn’t that how the commercial ops run?
Seeds tend to bring variety, which is great for people like me who only run for personal... but I don’t have expectations like minimum yield etc to worry about.

I work in Colorado in the industry. I have a badge with the MED. I have a applicators license for the CDA for pesticides. Your concern will be mold and mildew and other pests such as mites and aphids. Carefully choose strains that have resistance to powdery mildew for example. I have seen strains grown on the same table, one covered in PM and the other looks great with no PM at all. I would choose pest and mold resistance above all else. From there go for some yield and some quality. If you are monoculture the same strain in 1 grow space, you can have a wild variety of strains. If you are putting multiple different strains in 1 grow space, you will want some level of uniformity. For example, most REC and MED growers, on a production scale, have 4 or 5 different strains in a grow room. Some indica and some sativa. What is important is that your strains finish in time for harvest. Most grows need to move product so they limit their flower cycle to 60 days. Some even shorten the cycle to 55 or 56. With this in mind, you do not want a 12 week sativa in a room with a 8 week indica because you will have unfinsihed sativas when you go to cut at 60 days.

Why not save months of time and energy and get some elites that aren’t in your area. Then you won’t have to pheno hunt.

He is right.. In a production setting, the last thing you want to do is pheno hunt. Your bottom line is at stake, so you need predictable results. You want to know how tall they will stretch so you know if you need that 3rd or 4th layer of trellis on. Or if you will be able to raise your lights up high enough in your grow space. There are too many factors. Too much at stake to go pheno hunting now.

If you end up choosing seeds, you should pick an already well established lineage. Why is blue dream still being grown in Denver? Because it is predictable.

Above all else, as I said before, choose strains based on pest resistance when in a production setting. Go from there. You'll save yourself money and wasted effort.

Honestly.. I would be asking growers in your local area what strains they find most resistant and resilient. The majority of "master growers" in the area will have a stock of strains they are used to working with. Asking someone online who lives out of state is not a terrible idea however you will get much better results if you can work something out with an established grower in your local area.

Are clones better? Not necessarily. Do you want to trust that the clones are clean? Do you want to dip your clones in pesticides to make sure? Seeds can carry virus and disease on the husk as well just for your information.... Some growers will dunk seeds to clean them before germinating. ETC ETC

For example, most REC and MED growers, on a production scale, have 4 or 5 different strains in a grow room. Some indica and some sativa. What is important is that your strains finish in time for harvest. Most grows need to move product so they limit their flower cycle to 60 days. Some even shorten the cycle to 55 or 56. With this in mind, you do not want a 12 week sativa in a room with a 8 week indica because you will have unfinsihed sativas when you go to cut at 60 days.

We plan on taking our time and pheno hunting for our favorites, in due time. Due to the whole immaculate conception law they just passed, we had to source all of the genetics we plan on ever using, within the first 90 days. After that we will have to show where we obtained each clone/seed.

We already have a good idea of which 4 or 5 strains we want to start with, I always enjoy hearing what other people have to say about things too.

I’m not the master grower, but I do plan on keeping a grow thread going of the rec grow, along with my own personal medical grow. I like to Do a small grow in my own personal space whenever I am able to. The Grow Light Spectrum seems to help with my depression and spending time with the plants is therapeutic for me

I’m still trying to convince them that having quality clones along with our seeds (especially some of the clone only strains I have access to) but they are determined that they only want to work with seedstock. The reason they wanted to make such a big order right at the start is because it’s what their lawyer recommended. We only had a limited amount of time to source all our seedstock for our future breeding projects...

They’re transferring my medical grow to their REC grow, so that only allows me to transfer a max of 10 adult plants, while at the same time allowing me to transfer an unlimited number of seeds.

Is you facility already built (tier 1 or tier 2?)? If so, you have to convince the investors to start with clones. You have to start making a profit ASAP to support the breeding work, otherwise you're just going to bleed cash. (your investors seem to have deep pockets, so it might not matter). The lawyer doesn't understand production and has misled your investors. Getting all that seed stock was I believe his suggestion so that you never have to buy seed again.

Do you have your personal permit yet? The OLCC came out with a bulletin yesterday stating that the grace period for harvest is over and anyone touching the plant has to have an active license for rec. It can take three months to get the damn thing.

Immaculate Conception is a bitch isn't it? To get around Immaculate Conception, you can transfer any Metrc tagged item between farms (unlimited), and I believe you can buy packs of seed from dispensaries and have them manifested to your farm (I've never done this one but it has to be doable). Learn Metrc, it's rather intuitive but there is so much manual labor it's not even funny. Consider hiring someone who's almost sole responsibility is Metrc.

Another thing to consider if your investors have deep pockets is to use Zeus Clones out of Oregon City (or Lake Oswego, I forget). Not sure where you are but they have facilities across the state. They make you sign a sheet that says you won't breed or clone their stock. Sucks I know, but it can get your farm making cash ($20-25 a clone depending on variety, minimum order of 10 clones. They deliver as they don't want you in their facilities.

My best advice, don't start a new farm. Oregon is a clusterf@@k and as pointed out prices are falling. Unless you are vertically integrated you're doomed. Sorry for being negative, it's just really hard right now.

Thanks. I already have my OLCC permit because I helped some other cats open their own dispensary on the coast last year. I’ve taken a couple training courses already on the METRC system, but I could definitely use a refresher course on the whole thing. I believe they just closed on their property and they’re about to break ground and get the structures built sometime next month.
