Nanda Devi

That's right. And when I chopped off the upper parts of the males, the stems and leaves were shiny in the sunlight, sticky and somewhat aromatic. I can only assume it was resinous trichomes although they weren't big ones I usually see on flower. Even rubbing any part of them brings aroma and stickiness. A delicate aroma. This site has had hybrids for half a dozen years, and I've grown out from seed or clones dozens of "strains". I've never seen anything like that before. I'm thinking it's for the rubbing, when they manually rub the charas?

Interteresting - that sounds likely... I grew 3 plants of Johaar recently, which I think a close neighbour (and so possible relative) to Nanda Devi in the Himalayas, and according to TRSC is also used to make hand-rubbed charas - but I didnt get any overall stickiness on my (one) male plant (or on the females... tho I was pleased with the volume of bud and quality of high). Might be that such plants need the intense light and wind agitation of being outside to bring that resin on? I've got 10 more in my current grow, so will be keeping an eye out for such stickiness - am hoping it is a feature of these himalayan charas plants and might also express indoors.

How are yours getting on?

If you want something that finishes end of October, I'd go for malana or parvati. It's apples to oranges though, they're similar but different.

Would it be possible to describe a little the differences ? I have never read a good description of the Nanda Devi high, I personally know the effects of Himalayan Charas (mainly Parvati and Manali) and I don't see where Nanda Devi fits on a mental-physical spectrum. Thanks !

Nanda Devi charas has a much more vibrant, stimulating, and heady high, with a lot of warmth to it

By comparison, charas from Parvati region (which includes Malana) tends to be less exciting or charismatic, even when stronger

If you check on other forums, you will reports of Nanda Devi finishing early, i.e. cut early Oct

(fwiw, I'm still puzzled by the idea that sunlight intensity isn't an obvious factor in how soon these plants mature)

I think you mentioned something similar on the Adam Dunn show. Like east of Malana/Parvati you'd see this change in effects of charas. Would also you say that Nanda Devi is closer to Nepalese charas in terms of effects?

Regarding sunlight intensity - as far as I know it's the ours of darkness, that determine the flowering onset, not really light intensity during daytime. I've seen this growing outdoors as well. Light intensity might have more of an effect on how fast a plant finishes, once flowering has kicked in.
So imo when you say it's an obvious factor in how soon a plant matures, I think you're right.
When you'd say it's an obvious factor in flowering onset, I think you're wrong.

At what latitude did Nanda finish early Oct.?

I think you're asking the right questions here...photoperiods differ from one latitude to the next. Hypothetically, all else equal, if you grow a clone outdoors at 45N latitude, and grow that exact same clone outdoors at 28N latitude, the two plants, while genetically identical, should finish at different times.

That said, here's my Nanda Devi, pics taken 10/15/20. This is the result of crossing my feral looking phenotype with a taller, domesticated looking male from a different accession. planted 10 seeds, got 10 sprouts! 4 out of 10 were female, but unfortunately, a rabbit munched the other 3 females, they're just stubs now.

My one lone, fully in tact surviving female Looks like it's going to have bumper crop!

Nanda Devi is the plant to the right:

SMOKE REPORT

Before you read this smoke report, keep in mind, this is the experience from one single individual plant. Nanda Devi has incredible diversity, so I wouldn't expect everyone to get these exact results.

Strain: Nanda Devi (RSC, 2018 accession, feral phenotype)

Material Consumed: Rosin extracted from water hash, cured under ideal conditions for almost a full year. Given the low flower yield, I turned everything into rosin, and the extract yield was surprisingly high all things considered! From previous reports, it seems like the buds wouldn't be worth smoking, but after my experience, now I'm curious to see if they are!

Aroma: Dry, nose-twitching spicy scent. Zero sweetness, but that was just this one individual, there's a lot of diversity. Every accession offered in the past has different looking plants.

Potency: Surprisingly, it was Medium High to Potent! I took 1 enormous vape of rosin and it got me borderline too high, I absolutely was unwilling to consume anymore! I was definitely uncomfortably too high for a little bit (I'm a light weight). For comparison, malana and parvati won't get you that high with the same giant 1 rip.

One possible explanation is that this strain is moderate in potency but has no ceiling, and that one rip was like taking 7 or 8 regular hits. Either that or the individual I got is just pretty strong!

Smoke: Smooth and light going in, but after the exhale, you could definitely tell there was a forest fire in your lungs! Seconds later, I sensed that I had just put my mouth to the exhaust of a jet engine (figuratively speaking, of course), but it wasn't intense enough to cause coughing. Definitely lighter than all modern hybrids I've tried.

Flavor (rosin): Despite being cured for nearly a year, the rosin didn't have a hashy flavor like parvati. Instead, it tasted like exotic Indian spices? Maybe it was like exotic burnt herbs used to make the place smell good? No idea how to exactly describe it, but the flavor was decent...not mouth watering or impressive, but not grassy or shitty in any sense.

Effects: very quick headrush after the one hit, the effects were almost immediate! I think after people read this, they'll want Nanda Devi even more, but for me, the effects were too strong! I got so high that it was slightly uncomfortable and I had to fight off some initial feelings of paranoia! After getting past that, the effects were still strong and soaring! There were unquestionable visual distortions, light headedness, and I think that's about it. I was extremely light headed but my thoughts were mostly clear.

To be fair, I don't know what the effects are like when you aren't too stoned, but when you get really stoned, I'd say this strain is racy!

Another really interesting fact is that the high lasted a very long time! After 4 hours, I was definitely still stoned, but it was beginning to wear off at that time. In contrast, when I consume modern hybrids, they'll get me stoned but then completely wear off within 2 hours or so.

Rating: 6/10 Always read the descriptions to make your own judgement, this is my personal rating, which might not reflect what others think. That said, I think my opinion might be clouded by the fact that this stuff just got me uncomfortably too high! Most people would give a positive review to a strain that gets you really stoned, but I'm looking for mellow, uplifting effects. This was more like an intense rocket-ride, burning on fire into outer-space sort of experience!

Maybe this strain isn't all that racy and is a lot more mellow with lower concentrations. As mentioned earlier, there's a good chance this strain just doesn't have a ceiling and maybe I over-dosed with that gigantic 1 rip. After learning my lesson, I'm going to experiment with smoking Nanda Devi buds instead of extracting rosin, maybe that'll keep the experience more down to earth rather than racing for the stars!

made for a nice read thank you sharing

There's some white pistils, some apparently pollinated and one one with developing seeds. It seems the fastest male and female were nearby each other and the female has some pretty advanced seeds pods.

this has been one of the most interesting threads I followed this year, nanda devi has some potential imo
hopefully the best can be brought out of her thru selection, while still preserving the lines diversity
looking forward to how this story ends thanks for the ride Plantguy

Here's some pics of the crop and different plant's flower tips. They're mostly seeded, so maturing earlier. Seems trichomes are plentiful but small. Loose airy buds. Nice flowery smell with unique additional aroma by plant. Not noticeable aroma even beyond 2m. Rubbing produces something sweet and nice. One plant almost like anice or Jagermeister. Isolated black mold on a few branches of a few plants, but it's been damp and cold quite a bit. I'll wait for obviously mature seeds before harvesting.
It's been fun and pretty easy. Very sativa type leaves. Theywere bent over to reduce visibility and didn't emit a strong odor, it's been a good experience up to now.

Hi Plantguy, thank you for the update, looking lovely! Have you found some significant variation in maturation and flowering onset times so far? I like the looks of the one in your last picture.

Maturation seems fairly similar together with most othercharacteristics. I can't see big differences, except that they all germinated at different times, some quite late. There's one of 9 getting nearly ready but ironically it is the only one with some mold, even though it's foxtailed and airy.

They're starting to look quite nice and ornamental. All were bent to reduce height/visibility. They bounced back and this beauty is about 3m tall!

Love those pics, keep up the great work plantguy! Really learning a lot from your updates, thank you!!!!

Here are some more pics of my nanda devi, pics taken 10/29/20. Hoping this will be done mid November. If we get an unusual heat wave this time of year, they tend to finish quicker, but since it's pretty cold, they take their sweet time to finish:

Nanda Devi : description from rsc & kwik

Genetics: Pure Himalayan Landrace
Sourcing: The rsc, Kumaon, Indian Himalaya, 2019 Harvest
Purpose: Charas (hand-rubbed resin)
Latitude: 29° N
Harvest: Mid-August to mid-September
Height: 2–4 metres outdoors
Aroma: Floral, tangy, spicy, herbal
Characteristics: Early maturing, soaring high, hardy, humidity tolerant
Grow Type: Greenhouse or outdoors
A charming rustic Himalayan hashplant, this is a specialised charas cultigen unique to a few remote villages of northern Kumaon to the east of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Unlike typical multipurpose Himalayan landraces, this strain is not grown for fibre or seed but instead is used by farmers exclusively for charas. The resin has an intense, soaring high that evens out into a long-lasting buzz.
Unusually fast-flowering for a Himalayan landrace, this strain is harvested from mid-August to mid-September during breaks monsoon in rains. Buds are highly resinous and aromatic, producing charas that has a better, stronger high than the distinct large-seeded strains (known as ‘dati’) which local villages also cultivate.
Aromas are floral, tangy, herbal, and spicy. The traditional rustic braided charas this landrace produces is somewhat harder and coarser than the typical Parvati type, but it has a very distinctive euphoric effect—an uplifting and positive vibe that makes it special.
Fans of Himalayan charas such as the Nepalese of the sixties and seventies will enjoy these plants. Highly recommended for those wanting a pure, fully authentic, and traditional Himalayan charas landrace.
Terpene and cannabinoid profile for a standout specimen grown outdoors in Spain:
THC: 10.87%

CBD: 1.05%
CBN: 0.08%
Beta-caryophyllene: 0.42mg/mL
Alpha-pinene: 0.15mg/mL
Beta-pinene: 0.17mg/mL
Myrcene: 0.17mg/mL
Limonene: 0.07mg/mL
Geraniol: 1.56mg/mL
Terpenolene: 0.15mg/mL
Humulene: 1.27mg/mL
Nerolidol-1: 0.23mg/mL

just thought id add this while she matures :) looks like this one had a nice rose herbal hops scent

Scooped this up for the reported 1.56 mg/ML Geraniol as well as it representing the majority of terpene concentration. Roses are calming, so rose scented cannabis should be pretty chill yeah? Much love
