that had to come from behind him, judging by the way the holes edges are splayed out. damn near a direct hit. maybe his prop/guns mistimed & it was his own weapons systems? lots of planes lost experimenting in WW1 trying to get guns/engine props coordinated...
my guess is a 20mm machine cannon shell
which the germans made ample use of

NASA's Cassini probe is dead but its work is still blowing out minds. The nuclear-powered spacecraft orbited Saturn for 13 years, and sent back hundreds of thousands of images.

The photos include close-ups of the gaseous giant, its famous rings.

On my way to Jamaica in '72...I had to go aloft in the bos'n chair to do repairs at the mast head...

Nice view from up there, just glad it was easy seas that day...
