I aint no sniviling little faggot homeboy we'll just leave it at that...

As for not up to our standards? Why is it ok to kill the economy of 3 counties like it's no big deal? Get a card and shut the fuck up it's not hard and it's legal and it's taxed when you go buy your bud at the dispensary so how much more money is REALLY going to be made and by who? I know it sure isn't going to be the folks that have already been put in jail and spent thousands in fines over this shit but you don't care about those dudes huh? Fuck the guys the drove down the hill in the fog at 3am with 15lbs to bring into town so folks had good stuff to blaze. Fuck those little kids who wont get new clothes for school cuz daddy's farm got took by the government cuz now "THEY NEED THE LAND" .. I've never seen the people so quick to vote themselves into something that is going to ruin what it was intended for in the first place.

LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED TO GAY PEOPLE!!!! I for one am straight and don't like it that much but we all the right to be miserable with somebody for the rest of our life! They legalized gay people getting married in California then next thing you know.... BOOOOOM!! It's ILLEGAL next year! What a great way to wipe out Prop 215 and have the people do it themselves this time!!! FUCKING GENIOUS!

You make no fucking sense. I dunno, I voted against queer marriage, who are "they"? And what are you saying exactly? My experience is that when one protests too much "I aint no sniviling little faggot homeboy we'll just leave it at that", it's usually a clue that they are what they claim they are not.

Never mind. Take a xanax and call me in the morning.

GARBERVILLE, CA - Anna Hamilton says she feels as if she's watching a disaster in slow motion.

The blues musician, radio talk show host and community activist is on the leading edge of a group organizing to address the potential collapse of the underground pot economy in three northern California counties that fall within the so-called "Emerald Triangle."

Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino counties produce the majority of marijuana grown in California.

While the exact production numbers are difficult at best to estimate, Humboldt State economists told the Los Angeles Times last month that marijuana generates an estimated $500 million to $700 million of the county's total $3.6 billion economy.

Marijuana usage numbers seem to confirm why pot is such big business for the triangle counties. In 2007, nearly 2 million Californians reported using marijuana during the past 30 days, with about 400,000 in the state admitting to daily use, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

"Even after the DEA comes in and raids the harvest, every man, woman and child [in California] would have to smoke 38 pounds of pot each year to approach the amount we grow up here," Hamilton said.

Hamilton's group What's After Pot was formed by business owners and community leaders to address the effects of recreational legalization on the local economy and troubleshoot the replacement of what has become a secondary source of income for many residents.

"My interest is the impact on the 30 to 40 percent of the population that derives supplemental income from the harvest season and works for $20 an hour, making $5,000 to $12,000 a year to supplement their minimum wage jobs," Hamilton said.

WAP has already met twice to brainstorm strategies. One idea was to market the Emerald Triangle as "The Napa Valley of Marijuana" should legalization pass in November.

Another idea was to tout the area's organic growing versus the indoor, chemical-laden grows in urban areas.

The group says they're concerned about the price of marijuana collapsing suddenly and displacing legitimate businesses that have come to rely on the steady flow of cash generated through the underground pot economy.

"Every business in town has pot money in the register and significant amounts of it," said David Kirby, a former Garberville business owner. "(Legalization) is going to have really serious, heavy consequences to this economy."

The legalization of medical marijuana has already been felt in these counties where a pound of marijuana used to sell for $5,000.

"Now, it's down in the low $2,000 range," Kirby said. "Some of the other stores are taking tremendous hits already because of the uncertainty of legalization. It's already affecting how people spend money."

Residents are well aware that many in the state are un-sympathetic to the underground, illegal growing of marijuana, but insist that doesn't change what will happen to them if legalization passes and they don't have a plan.

"Most of California's rural counties are poor and rely on a lot of state help," Hamilton said. "This underground economy has kept us self-sufficient and kept taxpayers from supporting us. So far, the general plan doesn't address (legalization), the county budget doesn't address it. If we don't have a plan, we are in big trouble."

have never seen so many folks pretending to "do it so you would have something good to blaze". wrong, you do it for MONEY! if not, you would GIVE all that you grow & don't smoke & call it charity. you can be offended all you want, but that won't erase the "selfish capitalist pig" stamp off of your forehead. NO ONE likes to have their cash cow killed for the soup kitchen down the block, i understand this. but some of you "doth protesteth too much..."

Ummmmm actually when the town has shitty smoke you do do it so you can have something good to blaze. Also my buddy that sold it was NEVER about getting rich on the shit and sold super shit for WAY less than other folks letting lbs go for 3400 he was letting the go for 2200-2400 making a whole $100 on a lb but yea that's all about the money huh? get the fuck outta here with that shit...

Grapeman is right... the only way to properly do away with the ganja black-market is complete decriminalization. anything else is just one step closer to CORPORATE $LAVERY

since he is dead now, i feel i must reiterate that JACK HERER SPOKE AGAINST THIS "LEGALIZATION" SCAM SEVERAL TIMES
Mr. Herer felt that this (AB 390) is a stab in the back to the marijuana community.... a way to line the pockets of the very same people who have been jailing growers and smokers for years.

it's another power play.. pure and simple.. Jack Herer got it, why can't everyone else?

I have a card in Oregon , but I would rather have it legal for everyone . Why? because the card doesn't protect me from losing my damn good paying job! What about all the good people losing jobs over drug testing? Like most political things , everybody is trying to protect their pocketbook ,including me!

i noticed that 95% of the people on this thread, that are arguing for legalization, either do not grow or grow very small......

of course its the CONSUMER who wants it legalized.........

who cares about the PRODUCER? there just assholes and money hungry dicks for continually supplying YOUR weed habit?

what happens when the indoor producer finds it economically unfeasible to grow anymore? the consumer will be pissed when there is outdoor crap everywhere, or pre packaged, chemical laced packs of Marlboro greens.........

you may have your 5 by 5, if it passes. but, can you keep up with your own consumption with that little space? i know i cant.......

Growing weed is not hard. Newbies harvest decent to great smoke from their first run, even after lots of mistakes. It's called weed for a reason, grows hardy and isn't easy to kill.

Perpetual SOG grown in a 5x5 can produce a good amount of bud, enough for the moderate user.

If you use cannabis in California, chances are you have friends that you enjoy it with. Since each friend has a 5x5 space, there are several ways one and one's circle could go about producing their cannabis, producing plenty for themselves.

I agree that TC2010 will deal out a heavy hit to many commercial growers, but that alone is not reason enough to keep prosecuting the consumers for possession and usage.

There is a better chance of TC2010 passing than not passing, so be aware of this (and excited!).

I'd treat it the same way as homebrewing beer. I rarely buy beer now. I make my own, and I also grow my own.

Forget about the commercial stuff. That doesn't change anything for me really. They have craft beer, and microbreweries, this would be the same for cannabis. The microbreweries have to pay taxes, and they still get buy. Think about how many people drink Budweiser and Miller beer? It's garbage but people still drink it. So many people still smoke garbage bud also. Legalization would be a great step forward.

Maybe commercial growers have different opinions, but I am not a commercial grower. I grow a small number of plants to provide myself with some meds. I don't sell as much as a gram of what I grow.

Thundurkel, I admire your passion for the legalization movement but I want to explain that most people here against TC2010 are part of a small, special interest group that is the producers - those that cultivate marijuana to sell to dispensaries or into the black market.

I understand your fears about government red tape, government take overs, etc., and while you may be right, at this point it is too early to make claims such as "they may let you grow your own, but just wait till next year, etc." This is fear-mongering.

You say "wait for the right bill." Wait for what? There have been several bills introduced and failed to collect the minimum number of signatures. Why is one in the future going to be any different?

Speaking of the future, you think the future is going to be more receptive of the "right bill?" I'm sure you've read the news about the White House pushing for DUIs for sober people with cannabis in their system. How bout the next governor of California? It's either going to be Whitman, Poizner, or Brown, all of them have spoken against legalization, Whitman said it was the dumbest idea she's ever heard.

How bout the next Presidential election? You think its going to be a democrat or a republican? Which party do you think is more likely to ratchet up the drug war?

The bottom line is that "wait" is a very dangerous word, in life and in politics.

Look at the state of California as a whole - the amount of arrests and jail time due to cannabis, the student loans and scholarships lost due to cannabis, the children separated from their parents due to cannabis - and tell me that that should continue so a small, special interest group of cannabis producers can maintain their way of life. TC2010 is in the best interest of both cannabis users and California; its kind of odd that producers are on the same side of big pharma and law enforcement, but that's the way it is apparently.

Honestly, anyone whos not intelligent enough to realize the market demand increase would offset any deteriation in market price, doesn't belong in this industry anymore.

If your too fucking pathetic and small minded to open an LLC and start producing cannabis on a larger legitimate scale and willing to pay taxes on it, get the fuck out.

The ONLY way to ever bring cannabis into a legitmate industry is to tax and regulate. If that is to much of a cross to bear, go start cutting coke and cooking tweek, because cannabis will be legal in november.
