Watt for Watt, say 400w LED vs 400w HPS, does LED produce less heat?
If one unit draws 400w of power and puts out x amount of light. Second unit draws same 400w of power and puts out same x amount of light. They both will produce same amount of heat. No matter what you think, or how it heats your hand/plants. The amount of heat produced will be same. Leds wont produce much more light than hps, if any. Maybe better PAR. What makes many people think they produce less heat is that leds need heatsinks and active cooling to work properly. So that heat is transferred away and not heating the leds, like with hps light.
Led produce less heat, but it is much harder to get rid of the heat with ducting. With ever HPS setup it is easy to duct the heat out of the room. With an LED it is impossible to remove the heat from the room.

what makes it difficult to exhaust the room heat from led lamps?
I think the idea is that the hot air dumps out into whatever space you're using and therefore you have to move the air in the entire room which requires more creativity than with HID reflectors that come w/ 6" fittings for ducting the hot air. Run on sentence? Did that even make sense? Sorry, I just took a bong rip, yo.
Oh yeah... The reason I looked at this thread.... I am running a couple of LED's and like every other kind of light, they generate more heat as the wattage goes up. So, in my 2x2' mini grow space it gets very hot underneath the approximately 345-384 true watt LED. It's a closet, so I have to open it up and air it out every so often. Every time I do that I think about how I am shortening the life of the unit by not having a better system, but I am really limited in my options. HID would be absolutely ridiculously hot in the same space. The problem is, the unit starts to recycle its own exhaust and so it gets real toasty if I leave the door closed for any length of time. It makes it really dramatic when I open it up in the morning and it's cold in there.
I got my panel an this is pretty much how im gonna vent the heat. Thought about it since I saw in another members thread that his tent will get into the 90's if closed.Led produce less heat, but it is much harder to get rid of the heat with ducting.
