If you want a reasonable guideline for what is good to eat and what is not, review the Book of Leviticus in any Torah. Basically says to stay away from rats and vultures (things that eat dead stuff and bottom feeders). Easy identification by hoofs and habits. Even a limited mental ability of 5000 years ago could understand.
