Why do the most popular varieties come from American breeders?

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that northern California and the Northwest reached a critical mass of growers and breeders before most of the rest of the western world. If you knew a lot of people who were holding elite clones or seed lines and were willing to trade it was easier to breed.

I think another point in the early days was that flower was prevalent in North America while hash was more common in Europe so North American growers had a wider array of bagseed to work with.

maybe also the size of the country, combined with a certain amount of romanticization of the "outlaw" in the culture.

You had pockets of people in the North East, the South, Mid West, the Rockies and Hawaii besides the West coast working on strains.

plus an awesome gene pool south of the border to pick from.

The freedom of travel around the country allowed these different projects to be crossed with each other resulting in a great deal of Heterosis, aka hybrid vigor

Marijuana from around the world eventually made it to America because there was a large demand and the money to pay for it. Industrious people collected seeds, and started growing and crossing them. I imagine, these landraces were first hybridized in the US because it was the first time genetics from around the world were found in the same place.

Eventually, you’ve got Haze, Skunk and Norther Lights being bred. Fast forward a few decades and you’ve got Chemdog and OG.

Yes I think it's the size of the country, it has the largest market of any first world country so more growers and breeders. A lot of the US also has a perfect climate for growing cannabis.

With legalization comes marketing & hype. Only yesterday I saw an episode of ballers, where skywalker og was getting a few mentions. It’s just name dropping in mainstream media to improve the image & desirability of a product. I’ve seen lots of strain name dropping on various tv shows & films since weed was legalized in the states.
Don’t get me wrong there are some amazing strains old & new in America but commercialism has gone into overdrive with the green gold rush.
Believing that America is the be all & end all of cannabis just goes to show how susceptible you are to marketing. Sheeple?
Not trying to be offensive here but the cannabis marketing going on in the States is pretty obvious these days.
There are good & bad breeders all around the globe.

no one said america is be all and end all.
he asked why so popular

The US has no doubt the greatest variety of modern hyrids in the world due to its size and cultural history.

No one can compete with that.
Has nothing to do with being sheep like.

I think you are splitting hairs. The post titles implication is that the most popular strains come from American breeders & why is that.

Yeah, the countries land size & population size obviously come into it but so does advertising, product placement & name dropping.

Again, as previously pointed out I am not out to cause offence to the person who posted the thread or any Americans. I’m just pointing out that the perception of most popular can & is being steered by marketing.

Its being lined up for my country as well so I have no doubt that within the next 5 years or so it will be legalized here & will also at that point be marketed as the bestest most popular cannabis in the world.

That’s all, just saying view all aspects with an open mind.

Who are the most popular breeders ? Forgive my ignorance...

Currently or historically?

If we're talking about the past, anybody that gives Sam any hell deserves to be dry for the next few years.
Anybody who disagrees with Nevil should suffer the same!

If it weren't for these two guys, modern day varieties would be much much different, I presume.

Currently...
I'd say Bodhi is at the top of the list with a few others like Karma, Relentless, Greenpoint, Top Dawg, TGA, Chimera, Cannacopia, Joey Weed... Really there's too many good American breeders to list.

As well, I would include a couple Spanish breeders, ACE & CBG.
I don't see a whole lot coming out of europe but there are some good folks there as well, but this thread is about American breeders.

Complete over reaction! & you are a site donor as well!
Dude I’m 42 & there was nothing factually wrong about what I said. I’m not sure why it has offended you so much & quite frankly at this point don’t care. I have up to this point been polite in my comments, you on the other hand seem to think that your donor badge gives you the right to be an impolite obnoxious twat.
You don’t like what I’m saying, hit the ignore button & grow up you pompous sack of dicks.

Back to the topic. WHY... are AMERICAN breeders producing the most popular varieties?

It's simple. America is where the industry originated!
The ONLY reason Europe got involved was because they had a better climate for plant breeders to perform their work in. If Sam & friends had decided to move somewhere else, I'm pretty positive that that location would have become the cannabis Mecca instead of Amsterdam.
