Is This A Good Microscope?

Ive read a bunch of those reviews, for many of those usb microscopes, and they all seem to be the same, except some you can turn the light up or down.

It looks like you can with the model from the link provided, so that is a plus.

I have one like this as well, but i cant get images as nice as i saw on weed wars.

The cam i bought had REAL shitty software (AMCAP) so i had to go to pirate bay to get a better 'video capture' software.

All the little ones need to be focused by moving the microscope, a fatal flaw.

BUMP.

Would love to hear from other gardeners their choice in scope.

Krunch, im been doing more reading, i would guess harborside may be using a 5mp camera. They are all ~$900, but have the same form factor as the cheapos.

Everything ~$100 maxes out at 50X and 200X digital (which sucks).

These 5MP seem to do 250X optical.

Seems im going to be waiting another year to upgrade.

I dont know shit, i just bought one a year ago and was diapointed, ive been checking them out this holiday season.

Would love someone who actually does know about them to school us on them.

One thing i find ludacris, i bought a 14.1MP camera last summer for ~$250, so why is a 5MP camera >$900.

I might be wrong, but i though the 'sensor' is the same.

If you're interested, you could probably pick up a second hand stereo dissecting scope for fairly cheap, add an adapter for your camera, and you can take shots through the scope. Not exactly portable, but a good set-up.

a camera w/excellent macro capabilities will give you better images than a microscope, I own one of those $100 units and its usefulness is limited as its depth of field is very limited. just like any true microscope this one's developed to examine flat surfaces best hence the microscope slide & cover, this assures a flat surface is examined every time. these are the limitations of microscopes. screen shots captured with these digital microscopes will have a very very small area in focus.

EDIT: just looking @ the pics Amazon has for the unit almost proves my point, they include a closeup of a penny (a LOT flatter than a leaf & trichome) and a dollar bill, both flatter surfaces than we would like to examine simultaneously.

microscopes focus on a very thin plane.......

Agree I can take pics with my DSLR that would blow those microscopes cameras away. For 900$ you can get a pretty good DSLR setup..

i keep a veho in the grow for day to day inspections, and lookin at trichs when that time comes around. (along with a small laptop so i can move around w it) http://www.amazon.com/Veho-Deluxe-USB-Powered-Microscope/dp/B0025U0L8Y/ref=pd_sbs_indust_4

for $60 you gotta realize that this isnt a high end scientific device. but for $60 i couldnt believe how good the images i capture are. i have had 2 others (celestron and another i dont remember) and the veho is hands down the best of the breed. if you read the first amazon review you will see that there are 2 levels of magnification, and that the manual doesnt really tell you how to switch between em. and many of the bad reviews are from people who didnt get that....and dont think it will do the 200x.

very good unit, i recommend.

hey krunch check out this toy called EyeClops, the two links are both to Amazon and shows 2 different models of EyeClops.......

EyeClops-BioniCam ~ 100/200/400X magnification ~ $160

EyeClops-Bionic-Eye-Multizoom ~ Up to 200X magnification ~ $70

at least with the EyeClops you can walk up to your plants with it instead of relying on a clipping sitting on the table under your scope, capture images w/the built in flash drive etc.......

EDIT:
Disco Biscuit informed me that they're considerably cheaper on eBay & after checking I see that they are.

thats very true but these things are ok for checking tricks and taking some pictures of them. i bought one for about 50 euros and am happy with it.

you can check my album for some trich-shots and you will also see this problem about the focussing.

I'm very happy with my 30$ eduscience usb microscope from toyzrus. 20x and 200x ..sucks that the buttons are on the scope..but it works great for looking at trics. It's not like I'm doing lab work with it. IMO 100x better then the 30$ manual scopes you get at the hydro stores.
