Spar Varnish "Ok" as a Rolling Tray Coating?

Douglas.Curtis

Having rolled many a joint on a bar top or other thickly varnished surface, I was wondering if it would be considered a non-toxic coating for a rolling tray?

I'm looking for a very durable clear coat for a joint rolling tray. Any helpful or humorous information is greatly appreciated. lol

Here's an article to start.
Food-Safe Finishes

I have a wooden rolling tray sealed with spar varnish that's over 20 years old. I cleaned it up recently. These are before pictures:

You're good to go. I also have an old tray finished with a homemade (luthier hobby) varnish that is exactly like a 'spar' varnish only with apricot resin instead of alkyd or phenolic as 'spar' types usually have. In any case, both are 'long oil' finishes and should be completely food safe. IIRC, the synthetic resins are more UV resistant when out in the sun all day on boats.
